| Mucus and blood in stool Hi - Our little yorkie Emma (she is 1 1/2 years old) has had mucus and blood in her stool. This has happened about 5 times in the last few months. Every time we take the stool to our vet and they find nothing. We have taken away all of her raw hides and have her on the perscriptive ID food. Does anyone know what could be wrong? Our vet says that she is fine but I am still worried .... Thanks in advance for all help!! |

| My fiance's yorkie, Suzie, gets bouts like this along with hair loss on the back half of her body. The vet told them it was caused by stress. But it wasn't the parasite, coccidia. This may not be the same thing because Suzie is an older lady, about 7 or 8 yrs old. Has the vet done any X-rays or testing to see if she has an ulcer?

| I'd ask the vet what could be causing this if there's nothing wrong.

| Yorkies have the most sensitive digestive track I've ever seen. Many things can cause bloody stools. It's usually some kind of food, but stress can also cause this. I had a foster that was put on medication before I got her, and had nothing but bloody puddles. It was horrible. I had to take her off all medications and put her on home cooked food. It took me 8 months to find out what she can and can't eat. I hope you have good luck at finding the cause. I know how upsetting this can be. |

| Also, an important note. If you are somehow doubting your vet in anyway, it never hurts to go ask another vet.

| I have a yorkie with food allergies and a silky terrier (7 years old now) that has had the same mucous/bloody diarrhea problems. When he was 2 years old he started having the problems and I thought he was gonna die. It was the scariest thing I ever went throught with him. We spent several thousand $ on vets that couldn't tell us a thing. So, finally I went to a vet whom checked his stool(I took a sample of the bad poo in), did a complete blood panel. Everything checked out ok. She felt he had a sensitive tummy like IBS. So she gave us a hypo allergenic diet (it took two tries with the diet to find the right one). She also put him on a low dose of prednisone and a low dose of metronidazole to take during the worst flares only. We supplement with a spoon of yoplait yogurt daily. We stayed on prednisone daily for about eight months then weaned to every other day, twice a week, and now pretty much only when he flares does he go back on it. His flares are very rare now. I suggest strongly making sure that no one in your family sneaks people food to her. That can really mess things up. Consistancy with the diet and yogurt supplement daily seems to really help my Benjamin. |
