I too wish I had someone like you around when I got my first yorkie, And I wished I had had internet back then so i would of knowen alot more ways to help my baby.
She was gave to me at age 5 weeks because momma dog wanted nothing to do with her, and I took her in, I knew there was something not right with her and The vets all said she may have been inbreed, Well i knew that was not true because I knew the parents of the pup. But Later I found out that her problem was she was stepped on by a small child and age 2 weeks, and well it cruched her spine. There was nothing the vet could do for her and told me I should put her to sleep. I asked is she in pain? He said No but she will never be normal. well If She wasnt in pain then I would love her the way she is. and we did, and she wore a diaper all her life, but she was such a sweet happy Baby. but then at age 7 years every thing went wrong and he had to lay her to rest. but I always think If maybe I knew a little more I could have had her just maybe a little longer.

I know the internet is such a great tool. I have learned a lot from Babybear. I know when people ask me what is wrong with him I tell them he can not walk do to a broken neck. They tell me then why are you making him suffer. He is in no pain.(ask the vets how to tell if he was in pain, because an injured animal will only whine for a while for fear they will be eaten. They said to watch the eyes if they are dilated when they shouldn't be then they are in pain and seek help.) I just want to say to people when they say why not put him down. Is well if you parent or grandparent can not walk you usually put them in a home. And people with Alzheimer usually get put in a home and sit and watch out windows all day. IS that cruel?? So why should I put my baby down when he lives a very full life. As a matter of fact we took him to the county fair yesterday and tomorrow we are going to North Conway NH to go do some sight seeing and shopping and he will be with us. The only thing is he can not go into resteraunts that kills us. So we buy our meals to go and find a nice spot to eat. Boy i better stop I am rambling here. Just getting to my point here. I would have done the same thing as you did with your baby. But like you said the internet you can find so many things now.

Great posts Mybabe4me! My boy is old and going deaf and has cataracts. When I take him in the vet first thing I ask is he in pain. Vet says no. Thats all I need to know. You love your pet no matter what condition they are in and your pet knows that too.

I did what we had to do, My baby turned bad fast after 7 years, she was a mess and had so many things going wrong her body was giving up but her mind was there. She was in pain thats why we let her go, but the 7 years we had her she was not in pain. she started having strokes and well I wont get into it all because its so sad, but I miss her everyday.

Yorkieshadow. I can see where you are coming from. If Babybear gets to the point and I know he will someday(hoping not soon) I know I will have to rethink what to do, but I am hoping I still have a few more years with my baby. I do not know what I would do with out him. I am sending you a big hug Yorkieshadow I know it is hard to go through what you did. But like you said you had 7 great years with your baby and this is wonderful. I hope I have as many with Babybear.

EMMA UPDATE

Sorry for the delay everyone. I am so touched by the excellent informative postings we have received from many of you. I want to really thank you all so much... VERY HELPFUL! As fate would have it, I injuried MY neck (old injury flared up again) and have been unable to do much of anything. Something known as stinosis of the spine / neck... not fun to say the least. Anyhow.. lets bring you all up to date on Emmas condition. Since I have been laying down for the majority of these past 9 days Emma has been right by my side, laying with me on the bed. We kept Cyrus outta the room so Emma would not jump down and Emma & I logged in some serious rest and laying still time. I did manage to gently brush her out a few times. She appears to be quite content & happy but I do know from all your posts that we must be ever vigilant in keeping her calm, and limiting her movement. She is in no pain whatsoever and thanks to homemade chicken soup she is doing great! Eatting is back on track and she has put on a tiny bit of weight which is great to see. The Doc. is very glad to see her progression and I will ask her about the digital x-ray today vs. the MRI. Has been very difficult to do anything lately but at least today I am able to move around myself.

Emma requires no more meds at this point and shws no signs of pain and or distress. Still... we are VERY "CHINA DOLL" careful with her, as you suggested. I can tell, almost like . as if she was a child, that this broke her spirit a bit. Hard to explain but maybe some of you yorkie moms will understand this. She is quite cautious with her moves and will wait to be lifted up or set down. She will not jump which is great. We carry her up and down steps as you all suggested. So, for now...we both will lay in bed watching movies / listening to music and enjoy each others company. Want to get her in to see the vet again next week just for a consult and to make sure things are as they should be. For now I am working on getting my own head able to look left and right. Man.. it's always something!

Great info though everyone... your posts have been VERY helpful and please keep Emma, as always , in your prayers.

We take our Conner on trips with us. We went to Maine last weekend and also got meals to go so we could all eat together (we found nice spots in the shade or took meals to the hotel room). Today we are going to a cider mill and taking the furbaby with us. I know that if anything happened to Conner, as long as he was not in pain, I would do anything in the world for him.
