| Luxating Patellas I had scheduled my little poodle for patella surgery on both legs for next Thursday the 2nd of August, over the last 2 weeks my yorkie has had problems with his knees as well, now they are both scheduled for the 2nd of August. I am a wreck. Not to mention the dollars the worry is taking its toll. I am asking for prayers and feedback from others whom have had to deal with this surgery. Thank you

| aww...I'm sorry. Try and stay calm as they'll pick up on you feeling nervous (I know, easier said than done). They'll be fine! The recovery is on the long side but once it's over and done with you'll be so happy to see them running and acting like nothing ever happened. Good Luck to you....

| Thank you You're right they do pick up on our energy and mine is a little off right now, I will try to keep it together, I know they are in good hands with the orthopedic surgeon and he has done this surgery many times with no problem so I will try to concentrate on that aspect. Thanks for support.

| I am so sorry you are dealing with this too. We have two yorkies and only Hallee was diagnosed with this, this week by our local vet. She is limping and we feel so bad for her. She is scheduled with specialist on Monday and they will determine if surgery is needed. If so she will have surgery that afternoon. I know what you are going through. I just cried when I found out. I am so worried about her, but if she has to have the surgery I know it will help her. She can not run and play as normal right now.

| Will keep Hallee in prayer and hopefully your other little one will not have this problem at all. It has been suggested that they do both back legs at same time with both of mine, hopefully if Hallee needs surgery, it will just be the one leg. Let me know how she makes out.

| I hope you don't mind me asking I am curious about the cost. One of my little yorkies is skipping with his back left leg. I asked my vet to check it but he said that he didn't see him favoring it at all. He just told me to keep an eye on it and let him know if it gets worse. He is skipping on it even more now but we also just found out that he has a collapsed trachea so I don't know if surgery is advisable or even possible. He's only a year and a half. Just curious what the cost range is. I know that it would vary depending on the surgeon and what part of the country. |

| Gosh, I am really sorry to hear the news! I too have been down the LP road and I still have a way to go. This is just my opinion, but, being that I have gone through a Bi-Laterial LP surgery for Roxy...I would really suggest doing ONE DOG at a time. Recovery time, is A LOT of work, especially the Bi-Laterial surgery. Def. for the first 3 to 4 weeks, I had to caryy Roxy around with me and I could barely do anything else cause I only had one hand free. So I could only image having to take care of TWO - Bi-Laterial Surgery Dogs = NO HANDS FREE! Maybe you can do one dog and then at least wait a couple of weeks (just to get over the 'hump' with the recovery of the first dog) and than do the second dog??? Just something to think about Best of Luck and keep us posted! |

| Sorry to hear both your yorkies have the same problem. One of mine, Jennie, underwent surgery for LP on one knee. She was at the time 10 years old and recovered amazingly fast. She started off limping on both legs and was scheduled to undergo bilateral LP. Then, suddenly one of her knees mended by itself and was only operated on one knee. Dogs are incredibly resilient and recover real quick. Within 48 hours, Jennie could walk although she limped a little and a week later she was almost alright. I wish you and your little ones the best. |

| We checked out two places that had board certified ortho surgeons. The one that is about 1 1/2 hours away estimated it would cost 1500.00-1900.00 for the surgery. Another place 2 hours away with board certified ortho surgeons estimated 900.00-1200.00. Both places said the cost also depended on the weight of your pet. No question about who we are going with. The furthest and cheapest of course. However, they are also an animal emergency hospital so they are also open 24/7 so after the surgery I can visit Hallee as much as I want too. The place that is the most expensive is in higher priced city though. Quote:

| Wow-there are so many of us with the same problem. Rex came home today from his surgery for LP-he also had a partially torn cruciate ligament. He is clearly sore and uncomfortable but he did eat dinner. He's sleeping a lot which I am very glad about. I took the advice of others on this forum and set up an X pen for him, making it smaller than usual. He looks very small tonight...The incision itself is smaller than I expected 1 1/2" or so. His leg looks a bit bruised and swollen and of course he is not putting any weight on it. I hope he heals up fast! Anne |

| I wish you all the best and I am glad an Ortho Specialist is doing the surgery. Roxy stayed at the hospital for 3 nights. I picked her up on a Friday and was home all weekend. I stayed home from work on Monday, and then had to go back to work on Tuesday. For the remaining 6 to 8 weeks of recovery, I went to work a little late. Since Roxy had Bi-Laterial surgery, I needed to help her stand (with the use of a blanket made to act like a sling) to go potty. I stayed home in the morning until she peed and pooped. Then I gave her the pain meds, placed her in a tiny, tiny x-pen with food and water and her bed and pee pads. She was fine while I was gone, it's when I came home. They seem to act 'all better' very fast, BUT, recovery time is serious. That's why I suggested doing one dog than 3 or 4 weeks later do the second dog. The first couple of weeks are critical for healing properly. I know with Roxy, by week 3 or 4 she thought she could run and play again and she certainly DIDN'T want to remain in the x-pen.....SO, to make sure she didn't injury her legs, I had to carry her ALL the time Well, anyway, I'm sure it will all work out fine. Please keep us posted! |
