My puppy has pneumonia. What should I do?

I found out my little puppy has pneumonia. They thought it was kennel cough at first. Any advice on how serious this is? She is playful and eats. Coughing sounds better; she only coughs a few times a day now. I am so worried about her and do not want to give her back for another puppy. She was sick when I got her from the seller. They are giving her breathing treatments right now and hopefully that will help and is on AB. Not sure what to do from there on.... When do you know that the pneumonia is gone?:aimeeyork

I would just follow your Vet's advice. It will take a little while for the AB to take action.

RLC12345678 07-03-2007 06:27 AM

Just obey the vet's advice and recommendations. Even if she *seems* well after taking the AB for awhile, make sure you finish out the ABs or it will come back.

She is so cute, hope she is better soon:) welcome to yt:D

Poor baby !! First - I'd follow the vets instructions very carefully and try to find others who've been thru this for tips....2nd - I'd talk to the breeder and see what she says - I totally understand you wanting to keep her and trading for another is not an option ...but the breeder should work with you I would hope she does if she came to you sick....and 3rd - if your breeder sucks and isn't responsive - post a review here so others are aware.

I've read where many can come thru this with no aftereffects but the treatment can take a long time - and GOOD LUCK to you - I hope she's going to be ok

:goodpost:

You probably need to call the breeder just to inform her/ him. The breeder needs to know for several reasons, but mainly so that any other pups can be checked.

Poor baby!

paulapoo 07-03-2007 01:05 PM

Sorry about your baby. If its like people pneumonia, it will take awhile for it to be completely resolved. I'm sure you know to finished the antibiotics. I would ask the vet if its viral or bacterial and what the difference is between them. Hope your baby continues to improve!!!

Oh they know. I think they knew before they sold her to me. They allready have other puppies who are sick. That's whats frustrating. They said some of them have a cough but the one I bought was fine but that sure wasn't the truth. These people sell the dogs from the breeder in Arkansa (I live in Vegas).

I hope she feels better soon!!

I am so sorry to hear that! Hugs to you and your puppy.

Judy in Waco 07-04-2007 03:38 AM

Gizmo thanks you! Your little girl is a stunner!! Did you mention her name? I probably just missed it somewhere, but would like to know. How is she doing today?

Her name is actually BABY. Lol, when I write Baby people think I am just saying she's my baby which offcoarse she is but that is her name also, :-)
I was sad this morning. Her cough sounded bad. I dropped her off at the people I got her from and I couldn't help but cry. I told them this is very frustrating and I don't know what to do. I was sold a sick dog and I can't afford all the expensive vet bills it might take to get her well since I do not currently have a job and I don't want to bring her back to them not only because I am attached to this little girl and love her but also because it is heartbreaking to think that they might put her to sleep. She's going to get the treatment three times today...we'll see. How old is Gizmo and is she hyper as hell as my Baby is? :) She likes to bite on everything and everybody too.

Judy in Waco 07-04-2007 11:33 AM

LOL Baby is a cute name. Sorry I missed that. Gizmo is hyper in spurts and then he has his quiet lap moments. He plays differently with different members of our household. He is a puppy, so he does bite, but we don't play biting type games with him involving our hands or toes. When he bites hard we remove attention (He does NOT like that!) for awhile and redirect him to a chewing toy. The biting hard has stopped for the most part. We just have to be consistent. :)

I'm confused about something in your last post. Who did you take Baby to? The person you got her from? The breeder or ?? I probably just read your post wrong, but I'm confused.

wemple2 07-04-2007 11:50 AM

I'm confused too...I hope Baby is getting better. Did you buy her from a pet store? You said the breeder was in Arkansas...where is Baby getting treatments?

CO_yorkie_momma 07-04-2007 05:18 PM

I hope Baby is feeling better after her treatments. Did you decide to take her back afterall. Your post sounded like you did but then you sounded like you still have her too. Either way I hope she gets over this pneumonia that is keeping her from feeling good. Hope the treatments and ABs do the job.

I bought Baby from this couple who used to live in Arkansa but I guess moved here to Las Vegas now where their son live. They "bought" the puppies (they had 12 of them originally- different litters & they were different sizes) from the breeder who lives in Arkansa. That's what they told me. They don't seem to know much about Yorkies but the odd thing is that they seem to be getting medication easily. They brought me Clavomox the day after I bought her from them- they said it was prescribed for a different puppy with the same cough. Now they are giving her breathing treatments at their house (which I know is normal since I called the vet to confirm). They put her in a travel cage and cover it with a blanket, they use a astma machine and then the medication is in the cage. So I guess the puppy breaths the medicine in and it's suppose to help clear her lungs. A lot of people have said that helps. I don't know... I was pretty sad this morning when her cough sounded pretty bad. They have been blaming the dog being sick on them having air condition facing the dogs during their drive from Arkansa to Las Vegas. Is that even possible? I haven't seen air condition to be a reason for Pneumonia on any of the sites I have researched. I don't know....the couple seem to be nice people but at the same time they keep getting caught in white lies and makes me not trust them. I don't know what to think. If they are just trying to find excuses since they know they messed up or if they are up to something...

Oh no, I have my Baby girl. I was in tears as I spoke with the peopel I got her from this morning. They keep mentioning replacing her and keep telling them that I just can't do that. I feel bad and I am allready attached to her. This is so frustrating. I also told them that I fear that they would put her to sleep but she denied that. Either way I don't know. I can't let her go. I just pray to God she gets well. She is to adorable and has too much joy to give to feel sick on me! :-(

wemple2 07-04-2007 05:54 PM

So you bought a puppy and she was sick when you got her and you're taking her back there for medical treatment? Has Baby been to a vet, and did the vet prescribe the antibiotics and breathing treatments? Or are you relying only on the couple you bought the puppy from? God, I wish her well, for your sake and hers...

Judy in Waco 07-04-2007 05:56 PM

Hi Samantha,
Thanks for the update. Did you talk to your own vet or their vet? I ask because something seems very, very wrong with this situation. I will not say anything else and let more experienced yorkie owners here give you advice because I don't want to say the wrong thing. Please stay online for awhile tonight if you can and let them give you advice. Just know that I care! And I am here. If you get overwhelmed, please send me a private message on this site. Hugs.

YES officoarse. I have been to the vet, several times. They kept telling me I was just paranoid and that it was probably kennel cough but I didnt believe them coase my instict said otherwise. I had blood work done and it showed all white blood cells were elevated by 10 units which meant she had some kind of bacteria in her. I continued the antibiotics which the vet I went to gave me (same AB that the people had originally brought me- Clovomax) and I had them do X-ray and they said it's pneumonia. He suggested breathing treatments but said I could wait and see if the AB worked by itself. It would cost a bunch to do it at the vet's office. I called a different vet that told me that the vet should never had let us just go home without treatment. They said that home breathing treatment is an option but I had to go in and get medication to put in the cage. I brought it up with the people I got the dog from and they said they will arrange that and next thing I knew they had the medication and allt he stuff and wanted me to bring the puppy to them for a few days. I told them I don't want to leave the puppy there overnight, especially with another sick dog they had in the house, but that I would drop her off for the sessions and pick her up. And that is as far as we've gotten. I have been taking her there since Saturday night- exept for yesterday because they were not available. I called my vet and told him about the home treatment and he didn't say anything was bad about it. I am waiting for the treatment to be over with and then take her to a different vet. I don't feel that happy with the place I've been going to. The guy is young and doesn't seem to have much experience and I don't feel like the suggestions and actions are strong enough for something this serious. So I have defnitely taken her in and spend at least $300 on vet bills so far. My worry is how much more the bills are going to get and if she is even going to be fine. I heard hospitalization is really expensive and I sure can't afford that and it's just soooo wrong to be sold a puppy that is allready sick. I have insurance on my other dog, a Pomeranian, but didn't even get the chance to get Baby insurance since she was allready sick.

Judy in Waco 07-04-2007 06:20 PM

I know this has to be tough. You obviously care very much about Baby. Choosing a vet, treatment, etc.. can be very confusing. I know.

Please tell me what you think seems wrong with the situation so I don't think I'm just imagining stuff.
U see, me and my husband are confused too and feel like something seems weird with the whole situation. The impression I have right now is that the breeder in Arkansa is just breeding a bunch of Yorkies in an unhealthy enviorment and not taking care of them properly and working with this couple to selling the dogs in Las Vegas. This couple don't know anything about the dogs. Everything I ask they say they will find out. I have asked about the shot records at leat 7 times by now and still haven't gottne anything and the same with the so called AKC registry. Yesterday the lady said she swears on the bible the dog is registered because I started questioning her on it. She said she just has been busy since all of a sudden last week her 50 year old husband got a heart attack and has to get 5 bypass surgery and at the same time they are saying that they were out of town and at the same time moved to a new place. I don't know what to think. It's hard for me to think bad about people but I am sceptic. They just seem so nice in person. I'm confused.

I think you and your husband should listen to your instincts. I'm just reading your posts and I get goosebumps. I knew almost nothing about puppies or the business of puppies until I started reading this site and doing research. That's one reason I want others on here to hear your story and give their impressions.

Have you picked Baby up today? Is she with you now or with them?

I about to get her shortly, at 8pm. She is with them and has been there since 9.30 this morning. They are giving putting her in three times today they said since she missed yesterday and was coughing a lot this morning.

Judy in Waco 07-04-2007 06:43 PM

If you have to leave before the others are able to answer, please get back online and check this thread later. I don't know if the others will agree with me or not, but I would go pick her up as usual. I would not confront them yet. Just get Baby home and check back. I hope she's doing better tonight. I know you can't wait to see her!

mizzwanned 07-04-2007 06:47 PM

I'm so sorry! I don't know anything about Phnemonia in a puppy but I would take her to different vets to find out more info on it. I think those people are irresponsible and are lying to you. I'm so sorry this is happening to you!

wemple2 07-04-2007 06:58 PM

Samantha, Did they give you any paper work when you bought the puppy, does she have a health guarantee? I agree with Judy...go get your baby, don't ask them any questions yet, just bring Baby home. Then come back on here...we will get some other opinions from some of the people here that have dealt with this kind of thing to help you. My personal feeling is they are taking advantage of you. That Baby deserves better treatment and they should be responsible for that treatment. They sold you a sick puppy, that's just wrong. They should be footing the vet bills, not treating her at their place. She could very possibly need to be hospitalized. I want to see what other people here think. We will help you get Baby better. But most important thing to do now is get her out of there and back home with you. I pray that Baby will make it, that she will get the proper care. Good luck, come back here for further assistance. Please...

I am so sorry your little one is so sick does naveda have puppy lemon laws?

Here's a really good link on Pneumonia management that you should read it is extremely informative. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body...anagement.html

Good luck with Baby!!!!
