Default new baby not eating

Hi. I have a nine week old baby weighing in at two pounds. She came home yesterday and does not seem to eat much. She woke up twice during the night. Once to do wee wee on the pad and the second time seemed very hungry and took about a teaspoon of pureed boiled chicken. Today, she hasn't eaten anything but maybe a half of teaspoon of the same. I have given her nutracal (Two ribbon size portions today) and one last night. I did get her to take a few licks of puppy milk and she has had some water. She seems healthy and active, but she's very skinny looking and I'm afraid that she's not getting enough. This isn't my first puppy but it is the first time I've had trouble with eating. I did not agree with her leaving the mom so soon, and normally would call and have her go back to the mom for a bit but I do not feel that it's a safe environment for her. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks. Elaine

You can try mixing half baby food with half baby cereal and Karo syrup. Some are tempted by Caesar's, know it's not up there on the list of great foods but if it appeals for now worth a try.
I would send a pm to Mardelein. She has a puppy formula receipe that she uses, or just search for it under her name.
You have a young puppy and it takes some a bit longer to get comfortable in a new environment. My Mi-Ki was 16 weeks on arrival and I had a hard time getting him to eat for weeks.
Hope all will work out.

You can also try the puppy formula they sell in the petstores..I forget the name of it but I mixed it and gave it to my baby by putting it in a saucer and he lapped it right up!! if yours is not ready for that try a small baby bottle with the formula in it.. Hope this helps..it worked for us. he was gaining weight at each vet visit.(Nathan had to be bottle fed from birth due to a small tear in his nose..he couldn't latch onto his mom)

It is a huge adjustment for the puppy. Did they send you home with the kibble she had been eating? Mix a little scrambled egg in it (no butter or seasoning). The pup isn't way too young or way too small. I'd baby her a lot and carry her around a lot. That will reduce her stress and at the same time she will bond with you. I'd not take her anywhere or let others hold her right now. Do make sure that she is drinking plenty of water. I'd see what I could do to get her to eat her own kibble by mixing in a little bit of the scrambled egg, boiled chicken breast, or lowfat cottage cheese, but I wouldn't go trying a lot of other stuff....it could upset her tummy terribly and you could end up with addition problems. Good luck to you both and let us know what works.

Angel's breeder gave me some of his kibble. He seemed ok the first day but after the second day he was not eating. I thought oh dear PLEASE not again!
Well after his vet check everything seemed ok except he was adjusting to his new home with us.My vet suggested Hill's canned A/D . It looks like pudding and she told me that my pup would love it,however she suggested it for temporary use only. I was skeptical and only bought 1 can.I would mix 1/3 tsp with 1 tbsp of kibble, added a little bit of water and mixed it up. Well he ate it all up! I did this for a whole week and slowy weened him off the canned food. It worked great for him and he now enjoys kibble only.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. Jultz, no the woman did not send me home with any of the kibble she was eating. This wasn't the greatest environment that she came from The adult dogs were cared for but not on the standards that you or I would take care of them. In so far as the pups go, I was told she was eating Purina puppy and mighty dog wet. Not the best stuff but I did try it and she turned her nose up so at that point I figured I may as well dive in and adjust her to what my other Yorkies eat, which is the dry Kibble (Chicken soup for the soul) free fed all day and then boiled chicken with brown rice. I did get a can of the Eslac puppy formula milk and she did lap some of it. She's really small. Bella at five or six weeks was just about the size this on is now at nine weeks. She doesn't seem shy or intimidated at all with the rest of my crew. Actually, very independent. She's not a lap girl or super snuggler. She wants to go go go, but when she's tired she'll crawl up and sleep on you. Thanks again and I'll keep everyone posted. I'm going to take some pictures tomorrow of her. Elaine

Oh...then holding her may cause additional stress if she isn't used to it. Sounds like you are doing a great job. Please update and let us know how you both are.

Gracie was like that when I brought her home. All she would eat is puppy milk. The breeder sent us home with what she had been eating but she had no interest. I supplemented her with nutrical puppy formula. It was a good week or two before she settled in and started eating with gusto. Just don't let baby's blood sugar get too low. Also, don't expect too much. I was worried because Gracie would only eat a tablespoon. Their tummies are tiny at that age. I also figured out that Gracie really did not like kibble at first. I started her on canned puppy food and gradually re-introduced kibble. She wouldn't eat it for the longest time, then one day, she did. Go figure. Good luck!

I also feed my yorkies Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul Dry Food.
I have a new 8 week old puppy. I am feeding her soft can food alternating with moistened Dry food. Then next week I will try mixing the can food with the moistened Kibble. The following week can food & dry kibble. Eventually only Dry Kibble.

Default Thank You Again. She is doing much better

Thanks again everyone. She is doing much much better now. I guess she just needed to feel comfortable. I'm happy to say that she's eating very well now. AND, she loves to sit and snuggle now too. She is getting along with my other Yorkies, or rather they with her. Bella is very protective over her and Tia who is my small spoiled princess is thinking that she likes having a friend close to her size Thanks again. I've posted some pictures of her in the Nursery.
