| Not sure what is wrong with Diamond :-( Diamond usually sleeps with me everynight and this morning, I woke up to hear her coughing/choking for at least 10 minutes straight. It was very loud as it woke me up this morning. I also noticed a small spot where she had spit up. The coughing noise sounded like she was grasping for air or had something caught in her throat if that makes sense. I hate to see her going through that but I have NO idea what it is or why she is doing it. I took her downstairs after we woke up, and she continued to do it and even did it outside as she was getting ready to pee. I don't know how to describe it better besides that it is very loud and coming from her throat. She is definitely struggling to breathe when she does it. Any ideas?

| there's a few things it could be but my best recommendation to you is to get her to a Vet today.

| I just talked to the vet actually and she isn't doing it ALL the time so I just made an appointment for her. It's scheduled for next week, they just told me to keep an eye on her.

| Not being rude here but one of the choices would be kennel cough....don't think waiting a week is such a great thing. Would you consider it a honk? (the sound she makes) and does she gag at the end? I noticed you're in NJ...me too! I'm in NW Passaic County..

| It's okay...it sounds like she is gagging when she does it over & over. It's like she gags repeatedly if that makes sense. She doesn't do it constantly, she will do it once in awhile but today she did it a lot in the morning.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | hey lauren, sorry to hear diamond is coughing. in other circumstances i'd doubt it was kennel cough, but you were just at a meet up on sunday so she may have picked up something. did she do it before sunday?

It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | Doubt also that it is Kennel cough. Duke had kennel cough, and he coughed almost all the time. He still does if he get excited. Could she have tried to swallow a piece of toy or something?

| Maddie does a snorting/honking thing that sounds like she is gasping for breath. Sometimes she wakes us up at night doing it. Our vet has told us that she has an extra flap of skin that gets dislodged when she relaxes. The snorting/honking is to get it back in place. He told us to rub her throat to help make it stop. |

I do know that when she does it and I rub/massage her throat, she stops doing it. She will do it when she is either running around, on a walk or getting back from a walk, or that one night when she was doing it early in the morning & she was just sitting on my bed. It just gets me worried sometimes.

| If you will try to get her to relax.... she will probably do fine... My shih tzu does that all the time..... rub her throat tell her its okay ... I have heard if you blow in their face they will stop.... I think that sounds kind of crude so I have not done that.... I just pet her and calm her down and she is fine... alot of small breeds do that... |

| Sorry, I can't really offer much advice because I haven't experienced this. I do have a suggestion tho- do a search on reverse sneezing. I know some people with yorkies have problems with this and maybe the symptoms are similar to what Diamond's are, and there might be some advice on what to do about it. Let us know what the vet says Thursday, I hope its nothing serious and that everything works out OK soon.

| Yogi and Bogus have both been doing this for a week. Yogi had a spell night before last and finally vomited a little bit. They aren't sick. I remember last year around this time, Yogi did the same thing and we have had problems with allergies, so I'm thinking thats whats happening.
