| I'm so sorry that you lost two of your babies. thank you for taking the time to share your story. I don't see as there was any more that you could have done, if the vets said there was nothing wrong, what more could you have done? Evidentlfy there was nothing showing up in their tests. It's just sad. |

| I'm so sorry for your loss. It sounds like you're doing a great job with the surviving puppies. You might want to continue treating the adults and all other animals in the house as well. Adults can have the organism and not be sick. This condition is very contagious and if you don't treat the adults they will continue to give it to the puppies. Regardless of what you may hear, this is a serious condition in puppies and can be life threatening as you unfortunately already know. Here is an excerpt from: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?articleid=727 A puppy is not born with the coccidia organisms in his intestine. However, once born, the puppy is frequently exposed to his mother's feces, and if the mother is shedding the infective cysts in her feces, then the young animals will likely ingest them and coccidia will develop within their intestines. Since young puppies, usually those less than six months of age, have no immunity to coccidia, the organisms reproduce in great numbers and parasitize the young animal's intestines. Oftentimes, this has severe effects. From exposure to the coccidia in feces to the onset of the illness is about 13 days. Most puppies who are ill from coccidia are, therefore, two weeks of age and older. Although most infections are the result of spread from the mother, this is not always the case. Any infected puppy or kitten is contagious to other puppies or kittens. In breeding facilities, shelters, animal hospitals, etc., it is wise to isolate those infected from those that are not.

| Having dealt with coccidia - I feel for you. Bless your little ones - I'm very sorry for your loss. Sounds like your husband is a very thoughtful, caring man. Try not to be too hard on yourselves. It is easily miss diagnosed. Some vets "take" a sample and smear it on a slide - needless to say this will be a very small amount of feces and may not contain the organisim. When we dealt with it, we took in 5 samples taken over a 12 hour period. All of the samples were put into a testing jar with liquid, spun out and tested via a "float" test. When they do the float test, all of the organisims in the sample will float to the top making them really hard to miss. Obviously this is a better way to test since coccidia is so hard to find sometimes.

| I just bought a new puppy from a repital breeder for my daughters birthday. i don't know what I was thinking because I have a pregnant female on day 59. The breeder sent home albin for the puppy prophylacticly. I gave the dog his first dose Friday night. No one was allowed to put the two dogs in the same room. I gave strict instructions for who ever held the puppy could not touch Angel. We kept them both in two separate rooms. I washed my hands if I had to handle the puppy and changed my clothes. the puppy also had conjuntivitis. the puppy had 3 days of albin, and 2 days of eye medication and my daughter let the gatre open so angel came down stairs and smelled the puppy through the basket holes. should I be concerned about Angel being able to catch this . I am wearing gloves If I have to give the puppy any medications. Otherwise I am just having other family members. so I can care for Angel. My son was so concerned, last night he vacuumed the downstairs floor and shampooed the carpet. |
