lilly has had another seizure after two weeks of not having any. I got some karo syrup and water into her. But now she won't take any more, and she won't open her mouth and I can't get her to drink anymore. What can I do now?

I don't know how old she is but I was having to force feed Sophie at 10 wks. She never seized. That would have freaked me out. I would say get her to her vet asap. Best of luck, please keep us updated.

How old is she, how big is she.

I think I would just keep karo in her water for a couple of weeks until she gets a little older.

Oh dear,she's14 weeks now. We just went thru a month of this stuff and I thot we were over it. I just bought a house and have no reserves for the er vet.

I'd get her to the Vet ASAP to get her checked out.
Also have her checked for Liver Shunt.
Hope all goes well for her ..keep up update.

Right now you may want to take her in...but in the future, keep Bryers all natural vanilla ice cream in my freezer. After Lexxi seizes, if she comes out of it at home, I give her the ice cream in a syringe, if she wont lick it up herself. My girls love it.

Buy a tube of Nutri-Cal and give her. She needs to also be put on a special high protein diet.

It's not liver shunt, they have a specific behavior after eating protein with liver shunt.

Thank you, I will get the ice cream, she may eat that more readily than the baby food chicken.

I do have the NutriCal but she seems to do better with the karo syrup. I keep dry puppy food down all the time but I also feed her baby food chicken. That is all protein. Sylvia

This is interesting to me, bc my 3 year old Winston, started doing this recently, he eats very well, and is over 7 lbs, I question if the low blood sugar comes first or the seizure? Don't know, but i have heard that a seizure will lower their blood sugar. I would love to hear if I am the only one with an adult yorkie, not tiny, that eats well has this type of problem. The only advice I have to offer is to use the Karo syrup, or Nutrical to bring the sugar up, but also feed several times daily, to keep it up. I do confine him to the kitchen when we're not at home, to conserve his energy, bc he mostly sleeps when he's alone. But I still think the seizure comes first, but don't know why...

Yorkies with liver shunts/mvd do not necessarily show ANY symptoms...So don't think that she can't have a liver shunt simply because she doesn't exhibit that particular behavior. We wanted to have Miko bile acid tested because we had read so much about yorkies having liver shunts, so we made an appt. The weekend before the appt. Miko had a seizure out of the blue had to be taken in to the ER vet and that's how we found out he had a liver shunt...Not because he was exhibiting certain behaviors prior to this.

May I ask what kind of "particular" behavior are you referring to, is it seizures? Maybe I should get Winston checked for liver shunt. After his first seizure they did a blood test for liver function and it was ok...what do you think?

Head pressing or seizures after meals...Rubbing his head against the side of couches, the bed, wall, floor, etc.
The reason they do this after meals is because dogs with compromised livers cannot handle regular animal protein that's in almost all dog foods...
Animal protein turns into ammonia which is normally filtered through the liver, but dogs with liver shunts have an abnormal blood vessel that bypasses the liver, so the ammonia is not filtered and enters their whole system, reaching the brain and causing these symptoms of head pressing or seizures and several others. It puts a lot of stress on the liver and body.
But like I said, I have heard of many people whose dogs have not exhibited any symptoms at all and have found out that their dogs have liver shunt/mvd...
wemple2, I would take your baby to get bile acid tested...You won't lose anything by taking your baby Winston for this test. Believe me, it will give you peace of mind. Miko had lots of bloodwork when he was a pup, and we were actually told that it was impossible for him to have a liver shunt...WRONG!!
Bile acid tests are fairly cheap, depending on your area could be between $50-$75...

Just need to know how Lilly is doing, I certainly hope she's doing better, the seizure part is REALLY scary. But if keeping her sugar up, prevents this from happening, then by all means force feed her, several times a day.
