| Snorty, hacking, backwards sneeze? Hi everyone. My Yorkie/Maltese mix has been making this funny sound for the past week or two. It sounds like a backwards sneeze if that makes any sense. I cannot tell if it is a sneeze or a cough or a snort as her face does not change when she does it. It is usually when we are outside or after she has run around a lot. I have taken her to the vet twice since she has had it. And OF COURSE she refuses to make the noise in front of the vet. The vet checked her and said it is not kennel cough or pnuemonia and not to worry. But it still makes me wonder what it could be. The vet told me she thinks she has allergies. I was just wondering if anyone elses pup makes these noises? THANKS! |

| spanky does it also Hi yes my baby does it mostly when he is excited i was told it is very common in yorkies before i even bought him. my mom was a vet and breeder and has had yorkies all her life and she told me about it sounds like a goose to me. The breeder that we got him from actually gave me some littiture on it and i did some research too, they say it helps to gently massage there neck to get them to breath better I was also told that it can sound worse then it really is. The first time he did it I probly would have panic but i did what the vet told me and it worked. hope this helps you. |

| my baby does this too and i read on a thread here before too that if you cover their nose and make them breathe through their mouth it will stop. They get so excited that they probably forget to breathe lol

| I found this on another thread here: "Collapsed Trachea is different than reverse sneezing. Reverse sneezing is when the back of the throat spasms. The dog stands still, stretches out their neck, and often becomes bowlegged while they are trying to get air. It honks, wheezes, and often snorts during reverse sneezing episodes. Often the spasms will cease if they swallow a couple of times or if you close off their nostrils so it has to breathe through its mouth for a few seconds." Don't know if that helps.

| My male does this when he is SUPER excited. It makes me nervous still even after this long, it usually can be stopped really quick by picking him up or just covering his nostril holes!

| Same Here My Holly does this too. I was just on here actually wanting to post a similar thread. She makes it often and she does stretch a lot. Should I be concerned? It usually stops when I pick her up. What is it? I am telling the vet when I go on Thursday, unless it's an emergency of course. I will check back tomorrow. Thanks in Advance.

| oh my gosh....my lil one Rio does it too.... She kind of sounds like a pug when they breathe. But it only happens for a lil bit right when I let her out. Sometimes, snot will spray out (LOL, it's kinda gross but the vet said it was ok as long as it wasn't a discharge color and it is clear) When she runs a lot or she's playing with Sammie, it happens again too... I want to fix it but I'm not sure if it's a phase or what...Rio is only 12 weeks |

| Wrigley does this too. It's usually in the morning or when she's playing hard. We usually pick her up and massage her or if she gets a drink of water, she's ok. |

| IMPORTANT!!!!!! I thought Rio had innocent "backward/reverse sneezing" and actually, she has tonsilitis!!! And is on anti-biotics. Although Rio was doing the reverse sneezing...it was because her throat was irritated. So make sure your vet opens your pups mouth and looks down it's throat to see if it's inflammed!!!! This could lead to pseumonia (sp?) which is way more serious that tonsilitis!! |

| I just posted this on another thread. I was at the ER vet with Bonnie last Sunday and it turns out that she was Reverse Sneezing. She had gotten into some snacks in my sons room and we think something may have irritated her throat. The ER vet gave us a print out about Reverse Sneezing. She also told me if you ever have any questions regarding your pets health to use this link (below) because it is the one that the vets use. She said if you do a google search you will usually end up more confused! Reverse Sneezing (Pharyngeal Gag Reflex) Authored by: Becky Lundgren, DVM Reverse sneezing is a disconcerting event in which a dog makes unpleasant respiratory sounds that sound like it is dying -- or will die in the next few minutes. Reverse sneezing sounds similar to the honking noise made by a dog with a collapsing trachea, but reverse sneezing is a far simpler condition that usually does not need any treatment. It is called reverse sneezing because it sounds a bit like a dog inhaling sneezes. The sound the dog makes can be so scary that many owners have rushed in a panic to emergency clinics in the middle of the night. to see the rest of this article see the link below. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Con...S=0&C=0&A=2335 http://www.veterinarypartner.com/
