| Taking Pills...HELP!!!! Any suggestions? My skittles came to me (10 weeks old) from the breeder with Giardia and Coccidia. The vet prescribed Albon for the Coccidia, and Skittles kicked that bad parasite. The Giardia has been a little more difficult to get rid of. I've searched through the forums, and the advice is phenomenal....the only thing I can't find is any suggestions on HOW to actually get Skittles to take these pills. The Albon was easy. It was only 1/4 of the pill, and the Vet suggested putting it in peanut butter. That did the trick! He loves that. However that trick isn't working with the metronidazole that he prescribed for the Giardia! It's a half of pill....so it's bigger than the Albon, also it has a pretty NASTY taste to it ( I know I have taken it myself!) ANY suggestions on how to get Skittles to eat this pill? PS: Even wrapping it in cheese didn't work! I read this board DAILY....I get tons of advice from you all! Thanks for all your help! |

| I can offer two suggestions -- 1) Coat the pill with butter or margerine then wrap it in a small piece of lunchmeat -- roast beef works well 'cause it's got a lot of smell -- give one plain snippet of lunchmeat, the pill lunchmeat packet, and follow with a lunchmeat chaser..... 2) If the sick sorry rascal spits it out then..... recoat the pill with butter, open the little darlin's mouth, put the pill WAY back on his tounge and then give it a little shove, hold his mouth shut and rub his throat until he swallows. #2 REALLY TRULY works, but personally, I only use that as a last resort (It also works with cats and horses ). |

| We wrap our baby's pills in a little bit of liverwurst and roll it into a little ball. Pookie is crazy about liverwurst (professional animal trainers use it to train dogs because they loooooove it), so she scarfs everything down in one gulp. It works great! LIverwurst is available in the sandwich meat section of your grocery store. |

| Try wraping it in some liverwurst. If that doesnt work open his mouth and put the pill on the side all the way back. rub his throat after you close his mouth and blow in his nose so he will swallow the pill.Good luck

Mine seem to fish out the pill no matter what I put it in so I use #2 above. It's not mean and it's quick. Oh, I'm not even nice enough to put the butter on it! | |

| None of the above works for Percy, who i am officially crowning the pickiest puppy ever, however, we did find these things called "Pill Pockets", you can get them at the petstore (petland for us), and they are a hollow treat that you slip the pill inside of, and it kinda sticks and molds to the pill. Percy ate it right up and begged for more!

| Hiding the pill in a chunk of fat free cream cheese worked for us. Good luck!

| If they spit it out with cheese or other treats they liked, I would crush it up & put it in a syringe with pedialite & squirt it in their mouth. Worked for the girls.

One thing to remember if you're still administering Albon it can not be mixed with any other meds.....it can cause some reactions......

| I was also going to suggest getting a pill crusher, they are inexpensive. You dont want to choke the poor thing, lol. I know Albon comes in liquid & the other probably does to. I have had vets try to give me pills & I'm like come on you know what a fight it is to get a animal to take a pill I want Liquid. I know the 5% liquid albon tastes great the pets will lap it up, not sure about the other. If you do get liquid, you will be ticked your vet put you thru the pill poppin. Good Luck. And wow those are 2 very nasty & hard to get under control problems. Usually they try to treat coccidia in 10days but you will have them on it more like 20-30, how long did it take you? |
