Eye Problem with Yorkie pup I hope somebody can give me a starting point on what to do and what to look for for with this 4 week old pup. He had opened both eyes but now has closed one of them, there is nothing running out of the eye and it seems dry but he will make what seems like a attempt to open that closed eye but can't. For anybody that might read this, here is what I think happened (I'm not sure of it) yesterday he was trying to feed from his mother but she is trying to ween him. Everytime he would approach his mother she would swat him with her paw, usually on the back but sometimes on the head. I'm not sure if she has injured the pup or not, As I said nothing can be seen running from the eye at all, there is also no blood around the eye. Anybody ever had anything like this happen before? I would be thankful to anybody that can give me advise Thanks

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | can you open the eye yourself? if so can you see any redness or gunk inside the eye? maybe try wiping the eye with a warm cotton ball a couple times a day to see if that helps

Sounds Like Dry Eye to Me... I got my new puppy at l2 weeks of age. When I met the breeder to pick her up she had one eye partly closed and the other eye was normal. The breeder had trimmed her hair around the closed eye and suggested that she may have gotten a hair in the eye which irritated it. She also suggested that she had played with her litter mates and one of them may have scratched her eye. Two days later when I took her to my vet to have her checked out it was discovered that she might have a condition called dry eye. They gave me some medicine and a return appointment. They did various tests but continued to treat her eyes with drops 3x a day. Her eye did not seem to get better. I made the decision to switch vets. I wanted to confirm that we were on the right track with the diagnosis. Sure enough we were. To make a long story short her condition is inherited due to the breeding procedures. My vet wanted to write the breeder and suggest that she not breed the two dogs again because the condition would only become more common. My breeder denied ever having any eye problems with any of her dogs. She continues to breed the two dogs and still maintains that she has had no problems with any of her dog's eyes. Emily Kate has just turned one. She has cost us in excess of $2500 in vet bills alone, but she is worth every penny of it. As long as I can afford it we'll continue to search for improvement to her eye. She has some scaring in both eyes but one eye is worse than the other. Hopefully, we have addressed the problem early enough to save her vision. We just take it one day at a time. She is my "special needs" little girl and I love her with all of my heart. She is one precious little yorkie...even if she requires medicine 3x a day.

Thanks for the reply Ok I'll Try the warm and wet cotton balls 2 or 3 times a day. Actually I have already started that treatment for the closed eye. Thanks again, I don't know what this problem with him is but at least it's a start to help him. He does still like to eat and drinks water and milk and likes to try to walk all over the place, He don't seem sick but sure does have problems with that eye. It don't seem swollen at all. I did try gentle pressure to open the eye but it won't open. I am afraid I might cause further injury if I apply too much pressure or even tear the eyelid with too much pressure. The trouble is that I don't know how much is too much pressure to open the eyelid. Thank you very much for the advise.

I think I can help! A very similar thing happened to my Samson. We have a very large cat and Samson is under 4 lbs. The size difference has not stopped Samson from basically torturing Tigger, our cat, and Tigger usually puts up with it or jumps up high where Samson can't reach him (not that he doesn't try). About a month ago I guess Tigger was having a bad day and he swatted Samson, apparently scratching his left eye. Same symptoms as you described, but his eye appeared swollen shut. I immediately got on the internet, unsure if his eye condition was due to "combat". I scared myself sick reading about several disorders and diseases, so I took him to the vet that day. She put a green dye in his eye and it showed what looked like an ulcer. She said that it was due to a scratch. When she said this I felt relieved because there was absolutely no underlying condition. She gave me an ointment that I had to apply to his eyeball 3 x's a day and his eye healed in a couple of days. He is absolutely fine today and still attempts to attack Tigger daily. I'm sure you will want a definite diagnosis from your vet, but I hope this helps you because I know I was panic-stricken! The ointment is called neo-poly-bac and it worked very well for Samson, but I suppose it depends on how deep the scratch is. Good luck and please let us know how it goes!

The best thing you can do for that baby would be take him to a Vet. for a check. If left untreated he could go blind if the corina is scratched.
