| help with ear meds please :( Hi~ It was found that Milo has an ear infection when he went to the vet this week. I have to use an ear wash once a day and ear meds twice daily. The problem is, it took two of us to get the job done last night and today, alone, impossible. The Hubster is going to be out of town for a couple days and I need some way to make this happen. I have even gone so far as to wrap him tightly in a fleece blanket and still he wrestles free. He turns into the tasmanin devil and can't be contained. I have wrestled, cats, horses, cows and dogs to administer meds and this 4lb wonder has bested me! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I have a cocker that has chronic ear problems and she's a DREAM ....I can't even imagine trying to clean my yorkie girls ears ...I've been very lucky and I haven't had to...with Tessa - I have to use Q tips etc...but with a yorkie I doubt they told you to do that.... The ear cleaner works alone - as long as you can get some in there - let him shake it out...Also - wait at least 15 minutes before putting the medication in there so the cleaner is all the way out. the only thing I can think of is keep trying the Towel thing - turn him into a mummy - hold his head very still and be firm with him.....Telling him STAY right to his little face MAY work but you gotta be TOUGH.....it's amazing how strong a stubborn yorkie really can be when they don't want to do something - good luck !! |

No Longer a Member | I feel your pain. When we first got Chloe, the vet at her initial check up said she had an ear infection. We had to squirt that cream in her ears, and each new time we did it, it got harder. The last time was when she turded (a verb my son came up with!) on my husband Those memories are now fresh in my mind because she does the same fight (minus the turding LOL) when we try to get the petzlife in her mouth at bedtime...[sigh] |

| Have you tried sneaking up on him when he is very sleepy, or pacifying him by holding something yummy for him to chew on with one hand while working on his ear with your other hand? Bully sticks always work well. You could dip a nylabone or a kong in peanut butter and try to distract him that way. Good luck. I know how tough it can be to try to hold them down. With Mia, sometimes I just let her go because with the way she throws herself around to get out of my reach, I get scared she'll get hurt. She has me trained.

I'm also scared he'll get hurt--I wouldn't be able to handle it if he snapped a bone! You should see the scratches on my neck---gotta love him. | |

| If you grip the ear near the base, and he keeps wriggling to get free, just get that medicine in there as quick as you can. He'll realize that it hurts when he pulls on his own ear and quit it Luna just got over an ear infection, when we started she was a demon, but I stood my ground and now she will sit still for it. Oh, and I give her treats in between ears and when we're done

| Try letting him lick on some liverwurst off your finger or someone's finger while you do it. I swear liverwurst is magic. They can't resist it. Also, mistyinca, on the Petzlife website there are suggestions for getting the Petzlife gel into their mouths. I'm using it for my cat and she is no dumby when it comes to ferreting out meds stuck in food. But I used the suggestion to hide it in peanut butter (something my kitty doesn't actually like) and subsituted liverwurst for the peanut butter. Now I just make a little pancake out of the liverwurst, squirt a dab of the Petzlife gel into it, and roll it into a little ball. Honestly the cat absolutely went into a fit when I first tried to put the plain gel directly into her mouth. But with the liverwurst, she takes the whole ball of it, even tho I'm sure the gel probably squirts out as she devours it, and she gobbles the whole thing up despite the gel. So you might try that with your puppy. |

| I made a mistake and posted this on the teeth-brushing board over on health&diet. Anyway, I meant to post it here, so I cut and pasted it here. For mystyinca: Oh, I made a big discovery yesterday. Evidently the liverwurst thing has worked so well that now both my pets, my Yorkie girl and my kitty are crazy about the Petzlife! I noticed as soon as my cat gets to the Petzlife gel in the middle of the liverwurst ball, she goes nuts and scarfs it right out of my hand. Then I went upstairs with the smell of liverwurst on my fingers and squirted some more Petzlife gel on my fingers and held it out to my Yorkie girl, and she licked my fingers clean! So I gave her some more gel, and she licked that off too! Wow! I never thought I'd see the day! So this morning, I just squirted the Petzlife gel onto a little liverwurst on my fingers for kitty and she just licked it clean off my fingers. Woo-hoo! Problem solved! |
