| Broken Nail Help!! ?? Ok, my Gizmo has a very hurt paw! He has broken his nail about a quarter of an inch from the base. It's bleeding a tiny bit and he won't put his foot down. What should we do?? We put him in a crate where he is NOT a happy camper at all. He is hurting himself in there too as he never goes in a crate and it throwing a fit! Should we cut the nail off? Would the bleeding stop?? Poor boy!!!

| the nail is hanging on?? if it is still bleeding just dip it in some flour... that will clot it... i would NOT cut it of myself... he might flinch and you might cut it more.. i'd wrap it in a kleenex and tape around his paw... perhaps put a sock over that and tape aroudn it... either bring him to an emerg vet if he seems in a lot of pain or bring him in tomorrow.. poor little man.. that must hurt! |

| Yes it's hanging on really well too. It pretty much is broken in half and sticking out away from his foot. Right now he is VERY upset with me putting him in the crate!

| oh poor guy... take him out of the crate.. you don't want to upset him anymore and have him get hurt more.. like i said.. i'd get him to an emerg vet... at least to relieve the pain.. it will be a long night otherwise... and if you just can't get there.. wrap it up so he can't get at it.. but i'd really bring him into the vet if i were you.. good luck! let me know how it goes |

BANNED! | If putting him in a crate is causing him more stress I wouldnt do that. Do your best using flour to stop the bleeding and wrap up his paw best you can to prevent him pulling on that nail any more till you can get him to the vet. I think the above post idea with the sock is a good idea. Tape it on well so he doesnt tear at the nail more. Hope it stops bleeding soon, poor baby. |

| If you have a styptic pencil/liquid/powder you can also use that to stop the bleeding. Then I'd wrap it and try to keep him calm and off the foot until you get him to the vet. They can give him something to numb it until they can trim it and bandage it. Poor baby! And you too. Something tells me that you're going to have a long night!

| Well we took poor Gizmo to the vet the very next day..they had to put him under to be able to cut the nail since it was sooo close. They said the pain would be horrible if he was awake. He has his foot wrapped until later tonight and then I have meds for 10 days 2 X a day to put on it so the toenail and foot do not become infected. So if this happens to your dog - it really is a big deal!! Poor boy! He did walk on it right after though - so it feels MUCH better!
