| Please Help!! Romeo is having bathroom problems!! First of all, I'm sorry that this is so gross and graphic, but your help is very much appreciated. Romeo went outside a little while ago and was playing. Normally he uses the bathroom and then comes right back inside. After he had been out for a about 15 minutes he came back in and immediately squatted on the pad to poop. When he didn't go I took him back out thinking that he would go outside. Well, he hunched his back and got in the pooping position and nothing happened. He layed his little head on my foot and continued to try to go, but nothing. He then started walking around in the poop position. Still nothing. My fiance put on gloves and got warm, wet paper towels and tried to help him go. It appeared that he had some poop stuck halfway in and halfway out. (sorry) After he got it out we thought he was done, but he acts like he is still trying to go! He is just laying around. When we were trying to "clean up his booty" we noticed some blood on the paper towel. Is this just from him trying so hard to go? What can this be and what do you suggest we do? The next step is a hot bath to squirt some water on his butt. Again, I apologize, but we don't know what to do! Thank you all so much for your help in advance! ~Heidi |

| Oh, poor baby Do you have any canned, plain pumpkin around? A smidge of that a day is supposed to help with both constipation and diahreah. Is his hair long on his hiney? It might be getting caught up on it. I would think that if his poopie is really hard, it might make him bleed a little. If it gets to be more blood, then I'd get him to the vet tomorrow morning for sure. I hope he feels better

| I'd go for the pumpkin as well. It sounds like your poor little guy is suffering from some constipation. If it was bright red and very little blood then it's probably a small fissure (small tear) in his rear area from all the strain. I wouldn't be too worried about it unless it continues in larger amounts. Please keep us updated. I hope he feels better soon.

| Hi Heidi I'm no expert but I have had my Mia do this too. I usually just do what you did... use a warm wash cloth tho and try to get him to sit down in the sink/tub with warm water. I think the blood, as long as it was only a "trace", is from him trying to go. If it's more than that... call the vet.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | teh blood is just from him straining so much. i wouldn't worry about it unless it gets worse. i'd go with teh pumpkin as well. it should move things along better.

| Thank you so much everyone! Your replies were so quick and very informative! Thanks so much for the link Michele! What a great resource! He seems to be doing better as far as his "poopie problem" is concerned. He's not as lethargic as he was earlier. He did just throw up, though?! The only thing he had eaten was some nutristat. I'm headed to the store now to pick up some canned pumpkin. I had some around Thanksgiving time and tried to give them a little bit of it and both of them smelled it and turned their noses up! This time...should I mix it with the food? How do you all get your dogs to eat it? Again, thank you. I feel so relieved to know that this is a fairly normal thing! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | try mixing it in with his food if he won't eat it straight out of the can. he just threw up? do you think maybe he ate something he wasn't suppose to? if you have a happy dog that can't poop and is throwing up, that's a good sign that he ate something and is now blocked. definate vet case

| Gucci has been constipated at times, I give her a tblsp. of pumpkin for 4 days as per vets instructions and she ate it all up and was fine, another time she pooped and couldnt get it all out it was due to her hiney hair, had it trimmed and that did the trick. Good luck Im sure once he eats the pumpkin he will have an easier time. |

| We went thru this exact scenario with Pookie about a month ago when she was just 3.5 mos old. I tried to help her get it out, since she was walking around with it half in and half out. It wasn't working, altho I did get most of it broken off so she wasn't walking around with it hanging out. I freaked tho and called the ER vet since it was 10:00 pm and no vet was open, thinking she ate something that was too big to poop (my husband put this idea in my head when he noticed some object -can't remember now what-was missing). Anyway, by the time we were ready to head to the hospital, she managed to sneak off to the potty pad and poop the rest. So we've noticed in the meantime that certain things stop her up. When that happens, we give her a small handful of honeynut cheerios. This has quite a bit of fiber, and it usually makes her go immediately with no problem. Softens things up, but the fiber makes it easier for her to go, kind of pushes it all out. You might give this a try as it acts almost immediately, especially if you can't get your puppy to eat pumpkin. They seem to looove the honeynut cheerios. We use them as treats as well. It was recommended by a trainer whose book I read. Good luck. Hope this works for you. |

| Again, thank you all so much!! Romeo is doing a lot better! He had a little more than a tablespoon of pumpkin, and he went outside and was able to go to the bathroom. I was able to get him to eat the pumpkin by putting it on my finger and putting it into his mouth! Thanks a ton for the tip, Patti!! He got a nice warm bath and we trimmed his fur really short around his little butt. He's running around and playing again, so I do think the problem is solved! Thank you so much for the honey nut cheerios tip, Sweetums. I had already been to the store before I read your post, but I am definitely going to keep a box on hand from now on. They don't get any people food at all, so perhaps he could use a little more fiber. What a great idea! Perfect for training treats, too! I cannot tell you all how much I appreciate your input! It's so hard to see them hurting and not know how to help them! Romeo thanks you too!! |

| A Little Apple goes along way !!!! Someone on here suggested giving my constipated pooch apple, no seed or rind, and within 15 minutes or so she pooped just fine....so this works also, and I nearly lost her when she was around 9 weeks old, she was straining, we took her to the vet, which said she seemed ok, gave her some stuff to calm her stomach, and said not to feed her.......well....she got alot worse and wound up at another vet the next morning, who turned her upside down, and said here's the problem, she has a BUTT PLUG.....poop had hung up in her hair, and sealed off her poop shoot, so we now keeps it cut very short and have had no problems since..... |
