New pound puppy. Various concerns.

Thank you all.
I got him at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. After they found him and took him in, some lady adopted him and brought him back because he wasnt playful enough for her 2 year old. He doesn't have a name yet. I just knew I was going to ramble on and on in that first post, so I thought I'd warn you.

He still hasn't drank a lick of water. It's been 27 hours. I tried a spoon, my finger, kayro nothing worked. Turned his head at me. Maybe his teeth hurt. He just went pee for the second time, and peeeeeyoooo, he definitely needs water. Very strong. My sister has tiny doggies and she also said that he may not know how to lap water out of a bowl if he was kept in a cage. She told me to get me one of those drip bottles that they hang on the cages and see if he'll drink from that. Friend just went to pick one up. Only ate once so far. I just want to be sure to do whatever I can until we get to vet.

I used to have a problem with Monday and I used something from the drug store that is used to give babies liquid medicine (Like a nose dropper thingy used to look) ... He may gag the first time so take it slowly .put water in it and open his mouth and squirt it in .. he needs water ...

the vet may inject that water pouch in him to hydrate him ... don't let them keep him there unless NECESSARY .(big $$$$) .. the water pack does fine .... well, it did for me. I went to an emergency vet on Old Country Road east of Roosevelt Mall.

YES, you must get water in him. If he'll eat, you can just add some water to his food (sneaky, lol) Or you can use the syringe thing, you can get those at any drugstore

I've rescued two older yorkies in my time, both with their fair share of problems. As for the circling, the 15 year-old female I adopted walked around the entire house all day long, over and over. It took her almost a year to feel entirely comfortable. She was also dumped at a local shelter. I can only assume she came from a puppy mill as she had to have an emergency hysterectomy only 3 weeks after I got her (infection). I got the feeling she was so happy to be out of a cage that all she wanted to do was walk. What a sweetheart my Rosebud was. Anyway, my first yorkie (my beloved Chester) had to have all but two of his teeth pulled and it made such a big difference in him. You may have a rough row to hoe with this angel, but hang in there; it's worth every penny and every minute.

The previous advice about getting water into him is of utmost importance. If he's older, he could go into renal failure without any liquids. Let's pray that doesn't happen. An eye dropper, anything. He must have water.

Patience, time and a good vet will do the trick. Give him bear hugs from me, Chloe, Coco & Darla. We'll be praying for him.

You know what I just thought of, about the water? I used to let Starr drink from my spring water, the ones with the sport top, that little spout that pulls up. He might drink from that if he's used to drinking from a bottle, or you could just use it to dribble water into his mouth.

Ok, I think I figured a big part of it out. He will only eat hard food. I told my husband when he got home that he wouldn't eat or drink, and he had the genius idea to break some of Bruiser's food. (he's my boxer) He put it on a plate and he chewed 3 handfuls. Drank 2 little bowls of water.: You can see a change in the expression on his face. He almost looks relieved. He was probably starving. That's why he was staring at me! They told me when I got him to make sure to give him soft food because of his teeth. I wonder if he was eating soft for them. I know I can't give him that food for good, but I figure it's okay until the vet tells me what he needs.

We're on our way!

I am so happy to hear you have the pup eating food .... and drinking water ... Kudos to you.... I am sure the vet will steer you right ...

My precious Chester would only eat hard food even after having all his teeth pulled! For the first few days, I soaked it in water, but after a short time, he was crunching away with those gums. It's amazing what these little critters are capable of!

i dont mean to worry you but i had to have my annie pts yesterday cos 2 months ago she started walking in circles then when she was dreaming she would growl bite and jerk about more than just normal dreaming.and the vets said she had a brain tumor but we found out yesterday that it was a bad ear infection that had been spreading to her brain and by the time they found it it was to late.
even if the dog has been treated for an ear infection it might not of cleared it and it could be in the inner ear which then sometimes closes over so if a vet looks in there ears they cant see or smell the infection, sometimes blood work and an xray wont show it ether , the only way to make sure its gone is to open up the ears and flush them out or at least use a antibotic than goes in to bone, please get this checked out as i dont want another little one loseing there life.
plus distemper can make them walk in circles too.

I agree shashade, need to take him to the vet, ASAP! Could be something more here, then could be he'd been caged up most of his life, but better to find out now, so if it is something, it can be taken care of.
