My poor little Jackson looks so sad and pathetic right now.

He came home from the vet about an hour ago.

He is still a little wobbly and has to wear one of those collars that looks like a lamp shade. (I took it off for a bit to give him a break and let him eat/drink some, but he clearly wants to lick at his stitches so I had to put it back on.) The post-surgical instructions I got don't say how long he has to wear the collar. Anyone know how long he's going to be stuck with that thing on him?

He hates it, of course. And he can't exactly eat or drink with it on, which I find concerning. I sure hope he won't be stuck in this uncomfortable thing until his stitches come out -- that'll be 2 weeks!

As long as hes licking it he will have to wear it. Chachi only had to wear his a couple of days then he left that area alone

Glad he came through the surgery just fine. Hopefully, he won't have to wear the collar the whole time. Ask the vet if you can spray 100% aloe vera on it to see if that will deter licking. It has a very bitter taste, but safe for a dog to lick if he does.

Peanut had to wear the e-collar for a week because of the licking. He had internal stitches so he didn't have to get them removed. Maybe you could give him some Benadryl for the itching. As for feeding Jackson, I suggest you hand feed him, that's what I had to do with Peanut when he had on the e-collar.

forget the collar.. buy the poor little guy a baby onsie. I got one for layla when she was fixed... it was MUCH better than the collar... to help you out.. layla was about 3 lbs when she was spayed.. and fit into Premie onesies... now she is a little under 4.. and wears small. Make the poor guy more comfy!

I just brought home my second little boy from his Neuter..

. I put a baby onesie on them.. I cut a hole for their tail.. used binding fo the hole to seam the edges.. and used a baby diaper as a bellyband under the onesie,,holding the diaper closed with duct tape.. I put the diaper on just how a bellyband would go on.. Hope that makes sense..lol. ....it Worked like a charm!! the stitches stayed perfect.. and healed great (on my older boy my younger one just came home,,) pee pee times were great..if I was out.. I didn't have to worry about him peeing in his onesie..I so Dislike those lamp shades things they have them wear..

I like the onesie idea.

I think if he's still annoyed by the stitches after today, I'll move him into one.

Yes - I think putting some clothes on him so he can't lick that area is much better than wearing the collar. It may give you a little extra wash for a few days - but that's no problem.

My dog didn't need to have any stitches taken out either - and he really never licked himself - very very little.

Actually, my dog came home and ate the biggest meal in the world (yes, he did!) and then he took the longest nap in the world. And the next day, you wouldn't even have know he had anything done.
