| blood in stool my gilbert has had a loose stool all day and I noticed there was some blood in it. Do I need to get him to the emergency vet tonite or just wait till am? The only thing in his diet that has changed is that I switched hime to adult science diet food instead of the puppy kind. He's not acting any differently, still playing, etc |

| I would suspect the change of diet to be the cause, but like one poster mentioned it could be something that requires a vet's attention. If he is acting just fine and eating normally, I would put him on boiled chicken (easy on the stomach to digest) and cooked white rice (firms the stool) until his stomach heals. If the blood continues after 24 - 48 hours on the chicken and rice, he won't eat, or acts lethargic, or the diarrhea is frequent with any vomiting I would take him in because it is probably a bacterial infection or a parasite like worms, coccidia or giardia. If it was parvo, I don't think you would be posting, I think you would already be at the vets. The symptoms are usually very severe. In the future, whenever making a change in their diet, do so slowly over a two week period by adding a little of the new with the old and gradually increasing until the diet change is complete. |
