| Kelly I wouldnt be using Baytril on any pregnant or nursing bitch....ask your vet to change to clavamox if antibiotics are still needed... In immature dogs (less than 8 months of age) damage to joint cartilage can occur when prescribed Baytril.

| I have 5 pills left and Ill stop them. I see him today and ask him to switch the antibiotics, and also ask "What the heck where you thinking?" Actually Ill just ask to switch and tell him why. Thank you for telling me that info, I just read up on Baytril this am and wanted to ask him.....why he prescribed this particular antibiotic. I know he likes this particular drug for some reason. He prescribed it recently for a dog I had with a tooth infection. I asked him about this Med and contraindictions on possible pregnant females. He said he recommended this drug. I would rather be safe then sorry......I want it switched. One question. DO you recommend Oxytocin after whelp? Do you use it? My vet asked me about my feelings on using oxytocin regularly. I said I didnt know. Any recommendation? |

| its always better to be safe...if you feel for any reason there is any left over placenta oxy is a god send...Ive not had to use it to induce contractions but have used it within 24 hours of whelping... My girl China... I had given her the oxy the very next morning by the evening she was not eating, by that next afternoon her temp escalated to over 105...my vet was able to massaging the piece of placenta down and we pulled it out, I had her paws on my shoulder her back feet were on the table while he massaged her lower belly. Here is a drug list to keep handy http://www.peteducation.com/article....&articleid=856 unfortunately what ever you give mom goes into her milk and the babies.

| for future reference it vital to keep mom cooled down and hydrated while the drugs are taking effect (it can take two to three days for the temp to return to normal). I take the temp every couple hours, I used anything in the freezer wrap it in a t-towel and put it on her belly for about 10 minutes (even guilty of using hot dogs still in the wrapper lol)...

As far as the hotdogs kim great idea if they start to gain back their appetite, they can just turn around and start eating the hotdogs!! Joke! I did try to keep her hydrated and I thought about cooling her otherwise but was afraid of chilling the pups. So that I did not do, good future reference info. Yorkierose? To try to get her clean, the vet had me give 0.1 cc twice a day for two days. Now Im going to the vet to get a follow up on Bowgirl so I can ask My vet.........but I wondered what dosage is typical for you for after whelping oxy and when is the appropriate time to administer it? 12 hrs later or right away, etc? She certainly looked critically ill and acted it. Im sure if she wasnt treated she would be near death or gone by now. I truly appreciate each and everyones posts and support. This is what makes yorkie talk such a wonderful community, valuable tool for learning and much needed support when someone is in great need of it. SOmetimes giving almost instance relief! | |

| No, she never did go into labor and ended up having an emergency c-section. She was still acting fine, eating, and all was well as far as she was concerned. The pups were all lined up nicely (had an x-ray) on a Friday (pup in the birth canal and everything. Nothing Friday. Nothing Saturday. Nothing Sunday. Took her back in for another x-ray Monday....pups were all over the place (4) and the one had moved out of the birth canal. Vet assistant said take her home and keep an eye on her. My vet call Tuesday morning and asked how she was. She was perfectly fine, but zero signs of labor. They said to get her in there asap before we lost any pups or her. Had the c-section, and all is well. She was super huge this time...I thought she was having 7 puppies. I'll attach a picture a few days before she had her sugery... 2nd pic is with my Mom. |
