Cry My baby Ava is sick

My yorkie, Ava is almost 3 years old. She was vomiting and had diarrhea. I was out of town so my husband took her to the emergency vet on Sunday. She was admitted and is on IV and pain meds. The diagnosis is pancreatitis after x-rays, blood work, etc. I don't know anything about it. I haven't seen my baby in a week (I was back home for my grandmother's 100th birthday). I got the next flight home as soon as I heard she was sick. The vet recommended that I didn't go see her last night when I flew in because she had finally gotten acclimated. I called this morning, they still don't know if she will be released today. More tests! I pray that she gets well and that she is comes home today so I can hold her and let her know I love her.

Does anyone know about pancreatitis or has anyone gone through this?

It's cause is usually feeding them table food. If you do a search on this site, you will find lots of info about it. Never feed them greasy human food. I'm sorry she's so sick. Her diet from now on will need to change.

Here is some info that will help you understand it.

Rich, fatty foods can be very dangerous to dogs susceptible to attacks of pancreatitis. Often you may not know that your dog is susceptible until he is very sick with his first attack. It is often the smaller, more energetic breeds like miniature or toy poodles, cocker spaniels, miniature schauzers, and other small terrier-type dogs who seem particularly prone. However, any dog may have a problem. It is best to avoid these foods altogether. turkey skin bacon, sausages, hot dogs fruit cake, plum pudding deep-fried Signs of pancreatitis generally include an acute onset of vomiting (sometimes with diarrhea) and abdominal pain, which may be evidenced as a hunched posture or "splinting" of the abdomen when picked up. The dog may become very sick quickly and often needs intensive fluid and antibiotic therapy.

Thanks for the information and the links. We used to feed Ava some table food along with her dog food, but for the past 8 months we've only fed her Canine Caviar (kibbles - morning) and Natural Balance (roll). She was so fussy when it came to eating, one of my friends (dog traininer) suggested that I sprinkle a little bit of parmesan cheese on her dog food it. So, other than a little parmesan, and maybe a veggies or fruit for treats we don't give her people food. Maybe it is the pamesan???? Is a little fruit and veggie bad? Also, I have been gone for over a week. She stayed with our friends who also have a yorkie. If they gave her people food for some reason, could that cause this or do you think it was from when we gave her people food 8 months ago? I feel terrible that I caused this. I'll talk to the vet and too the people who watched her.

Even one little cheese nip could cause pancreatitis in some dogs - I know that one little cheese nip costs me a bundle in vet bills. Prayers for a quick recovery. Please keep us posted as to how she is doing.

They really don't know what causes pancreatitis, but rich fatty foods seem to be the culprit in many of the cases. I would think if would be most likely something she ate within 24 hours of the symptoms, not 8 months ago. I've seen other posts with parmesan causing problems, definitely discontinue the use of that.

Here's one link that gives an overview of pancreatitis.

I am so sorry to hear about your little one. I am a nurse..human nurse not dog.....and I also suffer with human pancreatitis and I will tell you that is the most PAINFUL thing I have ever gone thru, I have had Dr tell me that a pt with bone cancer said tht his pancreatitis flair ups hurt worse the his bone cancer, the above thread is right on......it is all about the fat....actually 85% of humans tht get it are alcholics and the rest tht get it are from people tht have high cholestrol and triglysr. and in most cases lead to diabetes. So I hope it is safe to say puppy isnt hitting the bottle every night so I am going with the fatty food problem ,which is the same reason I get it when I dont take my cholestrol meds and watch my diet. The treatment your puppy is getting is exactly wht I recv when I am in the hospital, which is NPO, IV fluids and pain meds, tht is the ONLY thing you can do, and sometimes antibiotics....NPO means nothing to eat or drink by mouth. I am sure after this scare with your puppy I dont need to tell you never give them people food, even when they turn on the puppy face....u guys did the right thing by bringing the puppy in ASAP, cause the sooner you get an IV started and letthe pancreas rest the better you feel...take it from someone who knows first hand, I hope this helps and if you want more info I am sure you can google or whtever something about pancreatitis from fatty foods and you will get a lot of info..........good luck and the puppy will be just fine he is getting everything he needs and only time will make this go away.............CHRISTINE

That was really nice of you to say. It's true, too. Actually, food may not have even been the cause. It could have been caused by something else and no one may ever know for sure.

Thank you all so much for your prayers, words of encouragement and wisdom. I get to pick up Ava tonight! Vet said that he would go over everything regarding diet, recovery, etc. I am armed with some knowledge and with some questions thanks to all of you!

I'll let you know what the vet says and how Ava is doing tomorrow.

Hugs!

Welcome to YorkieTalk. I am so very sorry that your little Ava is sick. Please dig a hole and bury the guilt -- that's where it belongs. As long as we are doing the very best we can do for our little ones and strive to learn and do better, what more could any one of us do? Not one of us here or anywhere can honestly say that we haven't made a mistake. Most of us are lucky with our mistakes and they don't come back to slap us in the face.

I will send prayers upward and healing outward.

Well said. We should be thankful we have so many YT members who have experience behind them to help us 1st time Yorkie owners so we don't make as many mistakes as we would without them. You are so lucky that your husband was concerned enough to get Ava to the vet so quickly. She is a very lucky little girl to have parents who love her so much. Sending prayers for a speedy recovery.

Hang in there !! The best thing is they know what's wrong and she's going to be ok - I hopep she starts getting better and comes home where she belongs - GOOD LUCK !!! pancreatitis IS treatable and it sounds like your husband acted quickly and good for him ..some men wouldn't know what to do and it sounds like he stepped up and got her help when she needed it.
