| My Puppy Is Hacking And Coughing Hello I am a new Yorkshire owner to a 10 week old male. His name is Max, I have had him for almost 2 weeks. I took him to the vet last week for his de-worming and 9 week needle and he was perfectly healthy. He is eating and drinking fine but the past day and a half I have noticed he has been hacking and coughing, once so bad that clear mucus came out of his mouth. He is acting normal but I am worried about the hacking and coughing. I have called the vet and explined his symptoms but they said it could be a dead worm in his lungs, they said to give it a day or so. Anyone have any ideas or experience this? I am worried and I can't wait a couple of days. Thanks |

| It could be kennel cough. I don't think the vet would have given a bordatello vaccine to a 9 week old, but you never know. If so, the injection may have caused him to come down with the symptoms, but usually this is within a day or two of receiving the injection. Did he just get the parvo 5 way vaccine, or did he get another one or something in his nose? It's possible that he was exposed to kennel cough somewhere else. It could be coccidiosis (parasite) which symptoms are diarrhea, cough, runny nose, runny eyes - if no diarrhea, then you can rule this one out. It also could be round worms like your vet mentioned travelling up the windpipe. Roundworms live in the canine intestine. The dog can become infected by licking or eating soil contaminated with eggs. The eggs are swallowed and hatch in the intestine; the larval worms travel to the lungs in the bloodstream, crawl up the windpipe, and are swallowed to return to the intestine and mature into adults. As they migrate up the windpipe, the larva can cause bouts of coughing. |

| It could be most anything. Is there a different vet you could take your puppy to? At that age, it is better to be very careful and take them to the vet early rather than wait. Because they're so little, they sometimes can get much worse very quickly.

| Welcome to YT, I hope your puppy gets better very soon. I'd certainly call the vet again (or maybe a different vet) in the morning. Good luck and keep us posted about your sweet little Max.
