| constipation? please help. i took romeo away for the weekend. he is used to long car rides and ate his regular diet. he has not pooped in over 24hrs. i thought maybe from the excitement or the stress of not sleeping at home. he is a good traveler. he usually poops out a nice tootsie roll at least twice a day. his anal glands seem ok - no scooting. how long before it can be dangerous? i'm really nervous he is my first dog. should i bring him to the vet? |

| I'm not sure how long they can go. But, if I give mine some canned science diet food it always makes them go. I also read on here that you can give them canned pumpkin, without spices and it will get them to go. Good luck! I hope he goes for you!

| I've always used canned pumpkin, but I came across this the other day: Lanatone - available from pet supply stores. Lanatone is actually a feline hairball remover, but also works as a laxative for small dogs. Administer three times daily as a laxative, a portion equal to the size of the tip of a woman's pinky finger for every 4 lbs. of Chihuahua. There was another recent post where a dog hadn't defecated for 3 or 4 days after surgery. The poster went to the vet on Day 4 and the vet said "let's give it until Monday (like another 3 days!) so if the dog's is not trying to go or does not seem uncomfortable I guess it is okay, at least according to her vet. |

| yes yes...I was the poster. My dog did not poo for 4 whole days after surgery. It was killing me because I didn't know what was wrong esp since the last time he pooed was diarrhea. A couple of YTer's and I did a poo dance for him on the 4th day and he POOed that day!! On the more serious note...I don't think you should worry until the third day of contipation because anything an irritate their small tummies. Travel, change if diet, anxiety, pain (for my leg - his leg), ate something wrong. If he still does not poo by the 48th hour call your vet. Make sure his stomach does not swell and give him LOTS of water. What I did was: changed his diet to boiled chicken and rice with water and gave him plain yogurt with NO treats. He did eventually poo. Good Luck and let us know!

Are there two products, lanatone and laxatone, or is my post a typographical error? | |
