I've always used canned pumpkin, but I came across this the other day:

Lanatone - available from pet supply stores. Lanatone is actually a feline hairball remover, but also works as a laxative for small dogs. Administer three times daily as a laxative, a portion equal to the size of the tip of a woman's pinky finger for every 4 lbs. of Chihuahua.

There was another recent post where a dog hadn't defecated for 3 or 4 days after surgery. The poster went to the vet on Day 4 and the vet said "let's give it until Monday (like another 3 days!) so if the dog's is not trying to go or does not seem uncomfortable I guess it is okay, at least according to her vet.
