| High Liver Enzymes ok, I am not sure how bad this is, but I took Tootie this morning to be neutered.... the vet just called, they cannot do it. I went ahead with the bloodwork before surgery and it shows his liver enzymes are a "little" high? Since I have never been through parenthood of a Yorkie, I am a little freaked. I asked specifically if it meant liver shunt, he said no, not necessarily but that he would treat him with antibiotics and see if it improves and retest him... has anyone ever had this? I just dont want to over-react but I want to be sure.. d

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Sorry to hear he couldn't have surgery but it sounds like you vet is being very cautious which is a good thing. Liver enzymes can indicate a minor infection or problem. Since they are only slightly elevated it probably is something minor. I believe that the reason they to the liver and kidney tests before surgery is that it is an indication of how their body will react to anesthesia. You do not want to put an animal under if thesea re elevated. Keep us posted.

| It's probably just a little infection. I am sure everything will be ok. Glad that you are extra cautious. Sending good thoughts your way.

| Being that your vet said they were only slightly elevated, I don't think I would be too concerned at this point. If they were high, he would have run additional tests. Keep any follow up appointments and I would probably have a blood test done with her yearly examinations to keep an eye on it. |

| I wouldn't be real concerned either.....so many things can cause an increase in liver enzymes. But - because they were elevated (even a little) - your vet will check them again. One of my dogs was sick for a while and the medicines she was on caused an increase in her enzymes - which returned to normal quickly when she finished her medications. Carol Jean |

| I wouldn't be concerned either. Something as simple as a high protein meal can cause the liver emzymes to be slightly elevated. |

Scruffy had high Enzyme Levels in Liver Too! Was in the Hospital 2 times. I have always wondered if it was Dog Food.

| Oh NO Bizkit has an appointment friday to be neutered and he has a liver shunt ,but he is never sick from it and the vet told me monthes ago to wait and see if he gets sick. so i'm wondering now if they will even do it. i just went in and made the appointment. I guess they didnt check his records when the appointment was made. so i will call the vet tomorrow and tell them his medical background and see if they will still do it. thanks for this post |

| You may want to consider having a Bile Acid Test just to be sure. Just for peace of mind. They could do it when they recheck his liver enzymes after the antibiotics.

| dog food with a high content of protein can also cause high liver results. it has to be over 100 to indicate shunt. |
