| eye lift :( poor Diesel Hello! I'm new to the forums. I just bought a purebred puppy off a breeder on Thursday. She brought him up from the city but "forgot" all of his papers and vet papers and insurance and said she is mailing those. When I picked him up, she noticed he had some gook in his eye (like eye boogers) and they were crusted. She put some eye drops in and seemed to act like it was no big deal. Diesel has been squinting that eye since I got him and i gently wiped away the crust but it reappeared. So today, I took him to the vet. The vet said the right eyelid is signifigantly smaller than the left and that is probably going to cause him these problems for the rest of his life. He prescribed some ointment i'm to apply 2x a day for a week - and than come back for a follow-up. He than told me that if the swelling doesnt go down - i MAY have to have eye surgery done, where they lift the eyelid so that it isnt so small - I asked him what the sucess rate was on the surgery and he said many people have it - but he didnt really know alot about it. Has anyones puppy had the same problem or the same surgery? I'm so worried. I have only had him a few days but he is as much a member of our family now as our own children. I love him so much it hurts here are some pics ... i tried to show both eyes in them so you could see how much of a difference i'm talking about. http://www3.telus.net/public/ktmorris/DSCN3274.JPG http://www3.telus.net/public/ktmorris/DSCN3273.JPG http://www3.telus.net/public/ktmorris/Picture%204.jpg |

| Wow there really is a difference, I didn't expect that. I'm sure your new baby will be fine, do all the research you can. YT is a great place to learn, and I'm sure someone here can help you. Welcome, and I will keep your baby in my prayers!

| I think I would have the surgery done. It has a good success rate and postpoing it leads to vision loss. It is also very uncomfortable for the dog. It would be like having a hair in your eye all the time. I don't think it is very common in Yorkies. You might want to find a Sharpei forum because it is very prevalent in that breed. |

| I could never replace him! Yes i think shes sending all his papers - she offered to "replace" him with his brother - but says she doesnt believe its anything he was born with - She said he's been vet checked by a very reputable vet in Edmonton and the vet didnt notice anything different about his eyes She thinks it is an infection he got while playing with his litter mates on the way up here. I told her, how could I replace him just because he needs surgery or MIGHT need surgery? I couldnt do that any less than I could "replace" one of my children because they were sick (i have a 2 yr old and a 7 yr old) Maybe if he were not such a sweetheart i would "replace" him I've told my husband that even if it means i'll have to put ointment on his eyes for his whole life than i will do it I found some things aout the surgery on the shar-peis . They said that the surgery has a very high sucess rate and there is a very very low chance of recurrence. I suppose that i would replace him if we were'nt already so attached - but i doubt any other puppy will be SOOOO good with my children - so cuddly, so cute - he showers them both with kisses, my 2 yr old laughs at the site of him - he jumps up on our great big bed (pretty high for a small dog like him) and snuggles under the covers on his back with his blankie pulled up around him and his little front paws hanging out .... how could i replace him? If i did, what would happen to him? Hed go back there and she couldnt sell him - not without telling people he had a condition and needed eye surgery - not many people want to take on that responsibility or burden. She did say she can have her vet come up and take a look @ him and bring his replacement should he not clear up -at her expense - but i told her it would be great for her vet to give me a 2nd opinion but that i do not want a replacement. Hes perfect in every other way - and already very attached to us all in different ways. With my 7 year old daughter, hes very playful - always showering her with kisses, with my 2 yr old son, hes a bit more cautious - he sneaks up, kisses him, backs away and repeats. With me hes a cuddle bug and loves to snuggle up in my lap and with my husband, hes a little man - chasing him around the yard or house wagging his tail. He also "fetched" a ball yesterday (although he didnt catch it in mid air) a little plush one and brought it to me so proud and we tossed it a cpl times - hes almsost an adult not really a pup anymore (5 months, born around Dec 23rd) but hes still my little baby. My sisters understand, but my cousin is being VERY heartless and telling me "you are stupid, its a dog, replace him" I dont know how ANYONE could be that cold! Please keep him in your prayers I'm REALLY hoping that it isnt what it is but if it should come to surgery - I'm thinking now he will be alright

| Keep us posted.... Well..your certainly in the right place for information. Welcome. Hopefully one of our breeders here on this board will see the pics of him and know about it. He is adorable...and the surgery sounds like it could fix his problem. With the crusted area it sounds like some sort of an infection.

| infection thats what i'm hoping it is. We're trying the ointment the vet prescribed for a week - i've been wiping the crust away with contact solution (thats what the vet suggested to use instead of water) and than putting the ointment on. He is still squinting the eye alot - you notice it most in that you can see the whites of the eyes in the other eye but not in this sore one. I'm REALLY hoping that it is just an infection - but the eye does look noticably smaller. I'll keep you all posted and thanks again for all your help and well wishes.

| eye Try the treatment for the conjunvitis..if it reaccurs, then I think I would have the surgery. It may clear up with meds, but always be smaller, which would not bother me in a pet. Be careful when you clean the eye,, you can scratch and irrated the cornea even more..best wishes |

| you're right about not replacing him...perhaps a huge discount for keeping the cutie pie to help with vet costs?

| I hope your little guy's eye gets better really soon! I am so glad to hear that you would not give him up for an eye infection. Please keep us updated and do not listen to that cousin of yours! You have a beautiful Yorkie who needs you now and you are doing a wonderful job in taking care of him. I could do no less myself. |
