| My Lucy has hydrocephalis-please help me! My little girl Lucy who is only 4 years old and about 6 lbs, has been diagnosed with hydrocephalis (water on the brain). Eventually, within months or a year, she will die I've been told, unless she has surgery where they insert a shunt in the brain. Does anyone know of this operation, how successful it may be or any other information available? I am besides myself. She's my baby! Please help! |

| I don't know anything about this, but I am sure someone who has some information will reply to you. Welcome to YT. You and your baby will be in my prays tonight. I can't possible image what you are going thru, but I will pray that everything works out. YT is a great place. I stumbled upon this site when my TJ was sick, I too was going out of my mind, he was only 6 months old and I thought I would just die if anything happened to him. Keep positive thoughts. You'll feel better soon when people start to talk with you. These YT folks are extremely nice, helpful and kind. |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | How horrible! What has caused her condition? Was she born with an open fontanel? Has she ever exhibited anything to suggest this or was it sudden?

| Did this result from an injury or do they suspect a brain tumor? Did they put her on steroids (prednisone) or diuretics (lasix)? I know the surgical treatment involves putting a shunt in the brain that re-directs fluids to the stomach. I also know that the older the dog is the percentage of success declines. |

(Unless you were too stunned and upset to ask many questions - which is understandable.) I can tell you that a shunt is the most common treatment for this problem. I have seen this being done often with babies - Please get back with your vet with a list of questions and get some answers. Also - get on the Internet -- and please realize that is is a common problem for people too. And, the problem, treatment, and prognosis should be very similar. Good luck - Carol Jean |

| Hydrocephalus Hi! I am brand new to this site and when I saw your listing I just had to respond. I am also the mommy of a little yorkie that has hydrocephalus. I knew when I bought him (Rudy) that he had a large open fontanelle and could have problems. Well I prayed for him very hard but we recently learned he does have hydrocephalus. I have been told that he will probably not live long either even though he is acting his usual happy self again. He just recently turned a year old and he is my little angel. We love him so much. I have went on google and looked under canine hydrocephalus and learned quite a bit. It may help you too. I am trying to keep Rudy as comfortable and happy as possible for as long as possible. He has been a blessing to me and came to me at a rough time in my life. I can not even tell you how much happiness he has brought to my home. |
