Unlove Gracie not getting up...

Gracie just had her first litter three weeks and four days ago. She has been so nurturing and protective. It all came natural to her, but believe me I wasn't so sure at first. Anyway, she's been eating really well(I feed her Science Diet puppy food with water to make it mushy and let it sit for a day, then heat it up for 25 seconds). She gets excited when I get her bowl out and starts barking at me to hurry. But tonight I noticed that she didn't get so excited-she seemed uninterested-that was about 6 pm. I went to pick up some food for me and when I got back she was nowhere to be found...she normally greets me at the door with TAS. I checked the puppies pen and still no Gracie. I finally found her at the head of my bed on some pillows. she will barely lift her head-just turn it in my direction. I sat down and got my food out-normally she's got her head in the box before I pick up a fork! She still didn't move-just looked at me. This is the first incidence of not eating that I know of with her. I picked her up and started to rub her belly-then I noticed that she's still bloody down there-I know they bleed after whelping but is it supposed to be longer than 3 weeks? Its not much blood, no odor, not bright red-but it still bothers me. Another thing... she pooped inside earlier and I am pretty sure there were worms in her stool. I am going to the vet to have pups dewormed tomorrow-can she get worms from her pups? She looks bloated and miserable. I'll write back after I take her temp. Please!!!! Any suggestions? I'll call the Vet first thing in the morning but I need some answers or a theory for now to sleep on-if I sleep!

I would put this in the breeders section so the breeders see it.
If I were you I would call a vet NOW.

You may need to get help before tomorrow. She might have a uterine infection - something left behind after the pups were born. Are there any lumps or hot areas on any of her tits? She could have mastitis and that would cause her to act that way. Have you been giving her calcium since the pups were born? She could be calcium deficient...I would get her to the vet especially if she is running fever...at least call them tonight and see what they think. I hope everything works out for her and she gets to feeling better soon!

Are you also giving her calcium supplements? You can give tums or goats milk instead of water in her dry food. She may definitely need to see a Vet asap.

I would also call a vet asap! It may or may not be an emergency, but I'd rather be safe than sorry! I'm worried and will say a prayer!!!

Love Thanks for comments

Right after I posted the first message, Tommy went to lay with her in bed while I researched. Not two minutes later, he said her mouth was quivering. Sure enough, her bottom jaw was chattering. I talked to Dr. Franklin at Emergency Clinic and he said to keep a close eye on her (her quivering stopped pretty quick-its like they come and pass really quick). He asked about some other symptoms...muscle twitching/spasms, panting, ect. None of which she's had yet. He said to try tums with calcium and give her some water, and if she's not looking better in a little while to bring her in. So far so good. She is "gruffing" at the edge of the bed now for me to come to bed with her. She can see me at my computer across the hall. I think that she'll be o.k. with some water and rest. but I still won't sleep tonight...I'll check in every once and a while if I can creep out without waking her. Thanks again! oh yeah, I picked her up and took her to her tee-tee pad and she went for what seemed like days- so that was probably part of the bloated and miserable look.

Oh yeah, really quick-I'm still wondering how long she should spot after whelping? I check her tits for any lumps daily, but truthfully I've never seen a case of mastitis nor do I know that I would recognize it if she had mastitis-although, I've read up on it I just haven't found alot of sites with "details". She isn't hot too the touch by her tits, and her rectal temperature was 100.3 degrees-pretty normal for her here lately. I have been giving her vitamins daily in sufficient amounts but I didn't realize that it was so low in calcium-my previous vet (i just changed) said that "if" Gracie was pregnant these vitamins would be adequate supplements-of course this was the same vet that told me at 6 weeks that she wasn't pregnant, she just had a full bladder. LOL! anyway long story short-5 days later I saw pups moving in Gracies belly-took her to have xray done at reliable vet-and she delivered 3 healthy pups 7 or 8 days after the xray. But if anyone can give me some info about the bleeding it would be greatly appreciated! I'm taking Gracie to my Vet ASAP tomorrow-My new vet is so good with Gracie.

quivering many times is a precursor to eclampsia...but usually this far into nursing isnt usually the case, eclampsia seems to rear its ugly head up to 14 days into nursing

FYI science diet is NOT good! I would change to a quality food that has NO byproduct or corn in it.

As well suppliment her with cottage cheese, cheese, goats milk...she needs protein and natural calcium. Give her tums 1/2 tab in the morning 1/2 night until you wean the kids...

She also might be getting less interested in feeding them they are old enough she doesnt have to be in all day and all night...she needs some TLC and a better diet.

congrats on the litter and good luck I hope your little mom is fine.
