ive just read through some of the posts, and my vets have all said boiled rice is ok for dogs as its bland as its included in a lot of dog food anyway. also my yorkie had ibs and it cant be cured in dogs as it cant in people just managed, she would be fine for months and then have a bout of it again, the vet just gave her meds when she had bad bouts of it and the rest of the time i would give her a bland diet :) |
I have never heard that rice was a no-no for dogs. It is carbs and digestible fiber mostly and very bland..that is why vets recommend it as a rule. You asked about yogurt.. I NEVER give my dogs of any age a dairy product that is not 100% lactose reduced. If the dog is sensitive to it, the diarrhea can be worsened by the milk sugar, lactose. If a puppy needs beneficial bowel bacteria, yogurt will not be a good supplier of them--the content is not high enough. Either buy BeneBac for dogs and cats OR acidophilus for humans. Just put a small amt of the BeneBac in the puppy's mouth. If acidophilus, sprinkle about 1/4 the powder from a capsule on the food or on the tongue. These antibiotics can be so helpful but when over-used or given in appropriately, our babies little digestive systems need help, FAST! I must use acidophilus with any antibiotic or I have real trouble. If your baby does not get well soon, would you consider acupuncture or a holistic approach for treatment? |
Caution: Chicken concerns Hey - since I've read that some here feed chicken to the little ones, I heard a story last night that concerned me. It seems that Arsenic has been found in chicken meat. I heard it on the news last night, and they said that only organic chicken doesn't have it. Although I don't feed it to my yorkies, I do buy it for my kids. I guess that I'll be getting organic from now on. Just a heads up. I couldn't find the link on my local news site. They ran the report last night, so they must not have posted to their website yet. |
I have had great success with Pure Pumpkin in the tin. I had a couple of Yorkies out of sorts, liquid diarrhea, that just would not firm up. I gave 1 tsp for a 5 -6 lb Yorkie and in a couple of days, stools were normal. I gave it once a day for three days. This is the PUre Pumpkin, not the pie filling although you will find it in the pie filling area of your supermarket. |
Hey Snickers Mom, how is Snickers doing? Buddy is STILL struggling with more diarrhea, but it's my fault - I tried to give him some regular treats (that said "easily digestible") but he loved them so much I clearly gave him too many and whoosh, the diarrhea is back on again :( I am putting him on strict fluids - low salt chicken broth, and then some pumpkin - I did try to give him some BeneBac and he ate it off my fingers which was great, but it hasn't seemed to fix anything... I will heed the advice of the dairy nay-sayers as well and quit the cottage cheese and just clear out his system. One his stool firms up, I will start adding in one thing at a time to see what is causing this! So frustrating my poor little baby. He has stayed mostly playful, but this morning I could see he was starting to fade. I just don't know what else to do. If this doesn't work, he's back to the vet for more tests. |
How is Snickers doing? I know I've seen you on a couple other posts, and have wondered if everything has cleared up. Did the doc ever do another diagnosis, or did things just get better with the treatment he prescribed? :) |
