Default Can Yorkies Get the Flu?

My 3 1/2 yr. old Yorkie had a warm forehead and ears tonight. That is gone.

Now, it is 2:20A and I cannot get her to stop shaking.
I put her under the covers, and put my hand on top of her and she constantly shakes as if she has the chills.

I don't know if adult dogs can get hypoglycemic, but I did give her a small amount of Karo syrup. I doubt that it will hurt her, but was wondering if anyone can help.

Is it safe to give them a small amount of aspirin.

Thanks so much, this really has me concerned. I have had her for 10 mos. and she has been healthy.

Kate

I'm no expert, but there is a fairly new canine flu out there. You might google "canine flu" and see what you can find. There is no vaccine yet, but as a rule, it is not considered fatal. I'm skeptical because I don't think it's been found on the West Coast yet.

I'm not sure what else it could be. I think Karo syrup was a good idea. As for aspirin, our vet told us that baby aspirin was OK for a larger dog. We never asked about a Yorkie.

Good luck.

Edit: I did a search on this site for 'aspirin' and saw that at least one Yorkie owner had been directed by her vet to give her dog 1/2 of a baby aspirin.

Thank you so much.

She is still shivering. I am going to call the vet. She did eat kibbles and rice just now, and had a bowel movement, although it was soft, but not bad.

I will let you know what happens.

Many thanks!

Oddly enough, I personally dropped by my vet's office Monday, and asked if he is on call after hours/weekends if my Yorkie get ill. The receptionist said yes, just call the regular office no. and he will get right back to you.

So, when I called I get an answering machine that says he will no be on call this weekend, and to go to another small town that is 20 miles from me. Really disappointed to say the least.

But, I am going to another vet at 11a today, which is 5 mins. from my fired vet's office. He is always open from 9 - noon on Sats. so that is much better. Why can't these
small town vets pinch hit for each other?

Anyway, I will let you know when I return.

I have a feeling it is anxiety as she is eating and drinking water. The weird thing is that she is under the bed, and she never goes there.

This all happened after I left the groomers yesterday.
In fact, she was fine when I took her in, and she is real
excited to see me when she is done. This time, she just jumped in her car seat and layed her down for a few mins., and I thought it was odd then.

Maybe it is just a cold.

Be back soon, and thanks.

Alaska Yorkie, thanks so much for helping me.

The vet took Sadie's temp., which was fine, and diagnosed her with anxiety. Gave me a med. called "
Homeopath Nature's Natural Medicine, Anxiety". But, he said only to give this to her when I leave between 3 - 8 hrs., which does not happen too much.

Thing is, I don't think this is it. She is not energetic at all,
and sleeps alot. Thank God she does have an appetite.

The vet won't be around the rest of the weekend, and when I asked him what to do if something happens, he said well, he is pretty sure it is anxiety. If I need help, I will just have to call around to see who is open.

That makes me nervous as I would have to drive 20 miles, and if it happens in the middle of the night, I may be out of luck.

Nerve wracking, but at least she was seen.

I really appreciate your help. It is scary!

That is nerve wracking. I'm glad you got her into the vet, though. Any idea what could be causing anxiety? It sounds vaguely like a post StewiesMom made in the last few days. If I remember correctly, Stewie wasn't eating, and he was acting strangely. Turns out she thinks he was afraid because he'd fallen off the couch. Just keep an eye on her. Good luck.

Forgive me if I already postd this, but this happened right after I brought her home from the groomer.

The groomer asked me to stay in the car as she just had her nails to finish. In the interim, a lady came in with her dog,
and the groomer's boyfriend came in with his Lab.

Maybe this scared her, or maybe the groomer dropped her.
I checked her over from head to toe wondering if maybe she accidentally got cut. Accidents do happen, and I really do like this groomer.

So, I am not really sure what happened to her. Maybe the vet has misdiagnosed her. I hope and pray it is not a liver, etc., problem.

She just has no energy. Makes me sick to see her this way.
She is just the best litte girl.

Thanks.

Just read the posting here and wanted to add "yes there is a canine flu that has been going around here in Californiia at least since last November," we are not sure but possably that is what took our Cassie, she had all her shots. We had a neighbor that lost three of her dogs, they were all one year olds and went like ours did, and passed the week before ours did. All had their shots and just all of a sudden was ill. They were sent off for autopsy, came back unknown cause (which I don't understand ) Sad to say, neighbor told me one vet wouldn't take their dogs in for fear it could be the canine flu. We decided not to do the autopsy on Cassie. I know how the lady feels about the vets offices. It was on a friday night that our Cassie took ill and there was only one Animal Hospital open and they said at two in the morning they was so busy and if you bring her in we may not get to see her and then at eight o'clock in the morning you would have to take her to your own vet regardless whether shes seen or not. I decided to do the next best thing and keep her as comfortable as I could and be with her at home, for I knew it was just a matter of time. I really wish that in areas where there is quite a few vets that they would join in a team to take turns in having one office open 24 hours, but I guess that is only wishfull thinking. It will be four months tomorrow that we lost our Cassie, I miss her so much today has really been a down day for me, I pray that in time God will ease the pain without our having her with us. Gosh, sorry I didn't mean to go on here but definately wanted to say that there is information on the internet regarding the canine flu and the states it seems to have hit, California is definately one of them. Hope the YT ladies yorkie is doing ok now. Patti

Hi Patty:

My heart goes out to you with the loss of Cassie.

I wish there was something I could do to help you in your sorrow, but I know we are pretty much on our own. Lots
of folks that don't have dogs, esp. Yorkies, just do not understand.

Sadie, thankfully, does eat and drink. She has now stopped shivering, but just sleeps. My thinking is that this is good for her. The shaking was horrible.

My vet truly believes it is anxiety. I am grateful that it is not the flu, or parvo which is prevalent in my area right now.

Take care.

Hi Kate,

Glad your baby is feeling much better. Your first post asked if anybody has given their baby aspirin. Yeah, my vet suggested that after shots if they seem achy or sore its okay to give baby aspirin. For Seary who was 3 lbs. she suggested 1/4 of a baby aspirin. Emma is at 6 lbs, so when I give it to her, I give her about 1/2 of one. I think somebody suggested against it, so you may want to ask your vet. I personally have never had a problem with it. And there has been a time or 2 when my babies were sneezy and seemed a little sick. I think they get colds and such just like us. The baby aspirin has always worked for me.

Kristyrae:

Thank you very much for the info.

It is so scary when these little dogs get ill. Sadie has always been so healthy, and then bam, things turn bad.

She is still sleeping, and I pray tomorrow will be a better day.

Thank you!

Dear Kate, Thank you posting back to me. I know Sadie is going to be fine, with your TLC am thankful to hear she is eating good and drinking good, that is important. Do you have any Nutri-Cal? The rest and sleeping is good for them when they are not up to par. I pray she will be feeling back to normal real, real soon. I know what you mean about many folks who do not have pets, some aren't very understanding when it comes to our precious pets, but oh my, they sure don't know what their missing out on. Please keep us posted about Sadie, look forward to hearing she is all ok.

Thank you Patti:

She is doing so much better. It sure was scary. My Mom thinks she had a bad virus. She held her in her lap for an hour Saturday, and she was very listless, and her eyes looked sickly.

I did get some Nurti-Cal today, as a friend told me about it.

She is almost back 100%.

Thanks for your concern.
