| Acting strange Hi all, hope everyone is staying healthy! My tedy 14.5 yr old has been having these strange episodes off and on for about a week. He will be acting totally normal, eating playing, pooping, peeing and then suddenly he starts shaking and walking very slowly and wont step off the deck to go outside, Also seems to not want to raise his head up. I will sit with him and pet him for a few minutes and then he is totally fine. . I have called the vet but they said due to the current covid situation they are extremely understaffed and cannot see him unless it's a true emergency. Anyone have a similar experience with thier babies? |

| This could be an emergency, I cannot believe a vet would say such a thing, it's not like you are asking to trim nails. If that were my pup he would be at the vet, that is not normal, I would call in as an emergency. You asking us, all we can due is surmise possibilities, you want answers not guesses.

What 'she said' above. Are Emergency Pet Places still open? If a vet brushed me off, I would wait til after hours and go to the Emergency Vet. WEAR A MASK ON YOURSELF. They should all be Masked, so I know I would feel ok there. Good Golly, they ALWAYS keep those places very clean.

| I was just at the vet for a follow up appt. My vet is trying to only see emergencies and they have the following safety measures in place. 1. Masks are worn 2. Only animals and employees allowed in the office. When I got to my vet I called them to let them know I was outside and checked in over the phone. They came to get Thumper when the doctor was ready for him. They brought him back and the Vet called me to discuss the issue. Afterwards she called me to go over the results and discuss next steps. This way it limited who was in their office but are still able to treat patients. They are also running as an Emergency Hospital so visits are now $100.00 Luckily mine was just a follow up so only charged $20.00 for the exam. Your vet should be able to see your pet and have protocols in place to make everyone safe. I would go to an Emergency Hospital if they refuse to see you. Also if you can get the episodes on video that will help the vet see what is going on especially if they episode does not occur at the time of examination.

| Thank you, I was able to get him in this morning with some persistence. After exam and blood work everything checks out fine. Said it could be his arthritis or behavioral changes due to aging. Just weird because it's almost like he gets scared. I wonder if he feels my stress? |

| It sounds like he may be in some kind of pain or discomfort. Are you seeing any blood or mucus in his stools? If yes, then this is an emergency and he needs to be seen by a vet. When this happens is his tummy kind of hard or is it soft? What are you feeding him, including any treats or chews? How close to feed time does this happen? Is he gassy? You can tell if you hear strange gurgling noises coming from his midsection. Or gently feel his tummy sometimes any gas will move with very light pressure applied, as in petting. Just saw you got him to the vet.

Most vets in my county are on a emergency calls only, and owners are not allowed in the building, they will take the pup in, you stay in car, communication via cell only. I'm just grateful if an emergency my vet is there.

Thanks for letting us know. Old Age. <rolls eyes> I SURE do not move or even sometimes THINK as fast as I used to. Do you normally spend this much time at home with your dog? If not, he could have been doing this for a long time and you just did not notice. At 14 1/2, it could have come on slowly, with age.....and until this, you might not have noticed.
