| Please keep little Beau in your thoughts Last Sunday I was grooming my little old man Beau and he jumped...I ended up knicking his side with the scissors. It did not bleed at all, and Beau has such fragile skin that it has torn in the past when sutured, so I decided to treat the cut at home since his regular vet was not in on Sundays. I flushed it, and used a medical manuka honey infused patch and covered the wound. I sat up with him all night, and he did not run a fever, or act ill in any way. I also gave him a very small bit of manuka honey to help boost his immune system. He ate, played, and did not attempt to bother his dressing (I covered it at night with a onesie, and slept with a hand on his back). He had a brief amount of loose stool, but seemed constipated. We gave him his usual probiotic, and he passed solid stool. The wound remained clean when changing dressings, and we thought we had turned the corner. This morning he passed bloody loose stool, and we immediately took him in to his vet. The vet said that the wound was starting a small infection, and that it had irritated his intestines. He cleaned and sutured the cut, and ran a full blood panel. Not good results...his red blood numbers are up, and he has some slightly elevated liver numbers. They are keeping him until Tuesday morning in order to hydrate, IV meds and run another full panel before release. I feel HORRIBLE, and am blaming myself...but my dear vet said that he is sure that Beau's age is playing a role and at least we are aware and able to reverse his numbers. Beau has never had to stay anywhere overnight, and I am already pacing. They do have visiting hours on Monday morning at 7 am, but I have concerns that seeing him, then leaving again, may agitate him and trigger separation anxiety. I want to do the best for him, not merely be selfish because I am already missing him. Any experiences to share?

| I am so sorry to hear this. Many years ago when ever one of my babies had to stay a few days at the vet I never went to see them for the very same reasons you have given. Came a time again one of my babies had to stay a few days, the visiting hours started at 1PM. I told them I didn't want to visit then leave her, she would be upset. The tech told me I should come in to visit, this perks up the dog. From that day forward when ever one of my girls had to stay I always went to visit. Speak to your vet or a tech about your concerns since Beau has stitches. Keeping your sweet boy in my thoughts and prayers (((hugs))))

| Thanks so much for your support. Both my vet and his two techs, who have known him for more than ten years, feel that he will probably do better if we wait it out to Tuesday morning. I will call first thing Monday morning to see how he made out over the weekend, and you better believe either way I will be there right at 7 a.m. on Tuesday for discharge!

| Your vet knows best. I know it's going to be a long 2 days. Stay strong for your boys

| I’m so sorry. I am positive his age isn’t helping so don’t beat yourself up. I’m sure the vet will get him feeling better soon. I will keep you and him in my prayers. Being at the vet is the best place for him so try to keep that in mind and get some rest.

| Just walked in the door with our little old man. He was so happy to see us...it almost killed me, but I managed to stay away until he was ready to come home. He had to stay all day today, but all of his blood panel numbers are solidly normal now, and he is back to his alert, active self. He was not happy to be on special diet there, and lost some weight, but he was discharged with no special food scrips. (Thank goodness...Beau's picture is in the dictionary next to the definition "picky eater"). He spent the trip home alternately whining and kissing my face, but immediately curled up in his fleecy bed next to me on the couch. I expect that he will soon be fast asleep. Thank you to those who gave me encouragement. I so appreciate having the support!

| Beau slept like a log last night, and so did I! Gus is giving him wide berth...he still smells like the animal hospital, but can't bathe him yet with his stitches. He is peppy today, and enjoyed some sunshine on the lanai. I am SO happy to have him home!!!!
