I am so sorry to hear this.
Many years ago when ever one of my babies had to stay a few days at the vet I never went to see them for the very same reasons you have given. Came a time again one of my babies had to stay a few days, the visiting hours started at 1PM. I told them I didn't want to visit then leave her, she would be upset. The tech told me I should come in to visit, this perks up the dog.
From that day forward when ever one of my girls had to stay I always went to visit.
