| There is something about the preservative in saline eye drops that aggravates Max's eyes. I've read that other people have the same problems with their dogs. When I need to rinse something out of his eyes, like a hair or junk he has picked up, I just use lukewarm tap water dripping from a cotton ball. I believe that cleaning like that with an active ulcer is bad, other than carefully combing hair away. The eye is an amazing thing and has the mechanics to heal itself. That is why the fresh, cool air helps. Keeps the eye moist. The antibiotics prevent infection. Constantly cleaning with saline drops may actually prevent the cornea from regrowing, closing the hole, and strengthening. I'm sure that I'm not explaining this adequately. Thankfully haven't had a problem in more than 8 years. I think having your vet's office do the grooming is a good idea, especially the bathing part.

| Maximo. I have not used saline for the ulcer at all. And I am grateful for the info about the harm it can do. I only mentioned it in passing about my experience years ago,at the behest of a specialist eye doctor. I just use the antibiotics that the vet has prescribed so far. But if need be again I will just use the lukewarm water as you suggest. I usually use the vet for bathing, but won’t do anything until the eye is better and the vet agrees. As the rain has stopped I took my dog for a walk in the fresh air today and he really perked up and enjoyed his trip. The cone helps prevent him getting into anything, but I watch him closely too. Happy that Max has been ulcer free for so long, |

| Ulcer update Great news!! Took dog to vet this am and the ulcer is gone! So unless any other issues, I am so happy. I have faith that my vet knows what he is doing and would certainly refer me to a specialist if needed. I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for your advice help and compassion during this terrible time we had these past two weeks. Hugs to all. Hooray for YT.! |
