There is something about the preservative in saline eye drops that aggravates Max's eyes. I've read that other people have the same problems with their dogs. When I need to rinse something out of his eyes, like a hair or junk he has picked up, I just use lukewarm tap water dripping from a cotton ball.
I believe that cleaning like that with an active ulcer is bad, other than carefully combing hair away. The eye is an amazing thing and has the mechanics to heal itself. That is why the fresh, cool air helps. Keeps the eye moist. The antibiotics prevent infection.
Constantly cleaning with saline drops may actually prevent the cornea from regrowing, closing the hole, and strengthening. I'm sure that I'm not explaining this adequately.
Thankfully haven't had a problem in more than 8 years.
I think having your vet's office do the grooming is a good idea, especially the bathing part.
