| LP Surgery...both legs? So my baby will need LP surgery on her left knee for sure Bc a week ago for some reason, we went from grade 2-3 overnight and ever since she’s limping and lame and or holding it up pretty much 95% of the time. Met with a board certified orthopedic today who recommends doing both knees at once since it’s possible the same thing will happen in her right leg which is currently grade 2 but she has no symptoms. I know there’s no way to know if her right leg will remain fine forever or not. It’s anyones guess. But it seems it comes down to cost savings (2 at same time is significantly cheaper) and only one recovery period, I don’t want to be back here in a few months. But obviously I don’t want to have both legs done if not needed. This may be rhetorical but I’m looking for advice/input from people who have had the surgery. In my shoes would you do one or both knees? Also, the vet said there’s a 95% chance if done right now, she’ll never have an issue again. Is that true? I thought I’ve read of others who had LP surgery on their baby and had to go back to have it done again. Thirdly, if any of you live in the Virginia, DC or Maryland area & have specific orthopedic vet recommendations I’d appreciate it. I didn’t love the vet I went to today. Not sure why as he was recommended to me by a friend. I’m just nervous! Thanks! |

| My boy has grade 3/4 in both knees, never had surgery. I spoke to many vets when I first got him (he's had this problem for 9 years) and the consensus was there is no guarantee. A slip, a fall, and the knee caps can slip right out. I can't tell you what to do, as my boy has never been bothered by his LP. He's had a full life of play and joy, even with LP.

| The issue with repairing LP in an adult dog is that more then likely that ACL will tear at some point after surgery. I would do anti inflammatory meds and rest for a week and see if that helps. I also wouldn’t do both legs at one time. Since you live in a big city I would get a second opinion.

| Yes I’m definitely going to get a second opinion. I think surgery is inevitable as to her bad leg though Bc we are going on 2 weeks of limping with rest and pain and anti inflammatory meds. So she can’t live like that & isn’t improving. The doctor was telling me it’s not so much the grade that matters what matters is whether or not they’re exhibiting symptoms of discomfort which she is. But yeah doing both at same time scares me Bc although it would only be one recovery period I don’t know how she’ll get comfortable. At least doing one sided she can rest on her other leg. But doing both poor baby will be miserable. Ughh. I hate to see these little babies hurt. Last edited by Noreen612; 10-10-2018 at 11:20 AM. |
