| senior dog issues Our sweet girl, Sassy, is 14 yrs. old now. Lately she has taken to pacing in a circle for 20 mins. or so. Other wise she is either sleeping or eating, she is blind and deaf, but knows where to find her food, water, bed and puppy pad. I'm wondering if I should be concerned about this? |

| Sounds neurological perhaps age related. This pup really needs a neuro evaluation by a specialist. Hope all comes out well for you folks.

Thank you for loving your senior gal. I lost my senior not too long ago; miss her every hour of every day. She had several conditions but did not pace in a circle. Having said that I have not experienced this behavior, the articles I read this morning suggest this behavior could be symptomatic of underlying issues that should be further checked by a vet--ear infections, neurological conditions, etc. Most or all of the articles offer a check list that may help guide you further. Hopefully those who have had experience with circling will respond further. Hope this helps--KatysMom MedicineNet.com, "My Dog is Walking in Circles," n.d.? For quite a different take, see 2003 YorkieTalk thread, "Yorkie Weird Pacing Behavior." Together with incoordination (which you haven't mentioned) and blindness, "circling" is mentioned in Wylie's Mom's posting, "Symptoms of Cushings." | I definitely think it should be checked out by the vet. It could be a lot of things.

| Thanks for your replies, I figured I would be advised to have a vet check her out. Just hoping someone would say, well that just happens when they get older something they do. I will get her in soon and have her checked out, she is a sweet heart, I just don't want her to be in pain or uncomfortable. |

| Poor Sassy. Know you're very concerned and hope the Vet can give you some answers. In the meantime, just keep loving her. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It could be a sign of 'doggie dementia' which can have symptoms like this, but aren't necessarily always present. If this is suspected, I'd ask about starting Anipryl asap.

| My now passed girl was blind and deaf at age 15 1/2 years old, she never walked / paced in circles, I must repeat what others have advised, please get her to a vet. Will pray for a good outcome. Please keep us posted.

Chloe is 14 and 11 months. All numbers and heart are good or real good teeth perfect. In the last 2 weeks her eyesight is practically gone. Unbelievable it was almost like it happened over night. We have pads all over the house she like yours basically knows where everything is but at night gets lost and runs into a corner once and awhile. One time I actually wondered were we really helping her by keeping her or were we helping OURSELVES because we don't want to let her go but she will stay no matter the sleep I lose or the cleaning we have to do as long as she seems to feel ok and isn't in any pain. You have to have the commitment She ain't going ANYWHERE | |
