| Loose kneecaps My little Lennon who is 3 months went to the vet tonite for the first time and they told me he had loose kneecaps but it is common and can go away as he matures. I read that older dogs get this but has anyone had a puppy this young with it? I am nervous because he is so little and already has it. Thanks for your responses |

| I know that there is a genetic disorder that causes problems with Yorkie knees. It usually requires surgery to correct. |

| Depending on the degree (1,2,3 or 4) will determine if they need surgery. Many dogs go their whole lives and never need surgery. You can also ask your vet about glucosamine and chondroitin supplements that help with the dogs joints. My Gizmo (now 2 years old, he was only a few months old also when diganosed! It can go away as they mature also, just keep an eye on them) has luxating patellas and i simply limit his jumping and am hoping we wont ever need to address this issue again! Best of luck! | I have never heard of Luxating Patella going away with out surgery. If he seems to be having pain I would have orthopedic surgeon look at them and they can tell you what grade, about how much pain he is in and if you should get surgery. I would limit his jumping as much as possible.

| thanks for your replies! He doesn't seem to be in any pain, I didn't even know he had loose kneecaps until the vet told me last night. She didn't seem to concerned and said she will keep an eye on it. I just got nervous! |

| I would watch him closely but if he is in no pain, most vets say not to do anything. This is extremely common in small dogs. I would be sure to be careful about allowing him to jump off furniture and also try to avoid having him jump up on his hind legs as both of those things can do damage.... |

| My Bambi is 4-1/2 and just been told she has this. No symptoms, she jumps like a rabbit. Should I discourage this & start her on Glucosamine with Chondroitin? |

| Penny has this also. The vet said it could cause her to have arthritis when she gets to be older. I told her that I already give her joint supplements and she said that was wonderful. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I discovered at about 1 year that my Jillie had a mild luxating patella. I was pretty devastated and pulled her out of agility training. I was told that at her weight -- she's about 5 1/2 pounds now -- that it might not be a problem. I gradually allowed her to do more running and playing. I'm happy to say she turns 9 next week, and other than a couple times when the leg momentarily locked in place, it has never been a problem. It always popped back in and she returned to running. No apparent pain. Personally, I wouldn't do surgery until it becomes a problem, bu a vet might advise you otherwise.

| Yes but keep in mind the glucosamine might not doing anything it’s kind of hit and miss. Works for some but not others.
