Gooey Eyes And Lethargic Bahevaior Today is the second day in a row that I have woken up to Bimmer's eyes crusty and gooey to the point that he couldn't open them. I have to use a washcloth to soften the crud enough that he can open his eyes on his own. When he opens his eye, his left eye is clouded with all the junk on the surface. The other eye isn't as bad, but it still produces enough gunk that it matts his hair enough that he can't open his eyes. I figured it was just allergies since yesterday was unusually warm, but now I'm not so sure. I tried to call the vet who was SUPPOSED to be open till noon, but no one answered so I'm on my own this weekend. Should I give him some baby benadryl? Are there any eye drops that will help? Overall, his behavior is very lethargic for the first few hours of the day, almost like he has the flu or something. |
I would say it is allergies too but allergies dont leave my dog lethargic. You might want to go to the vet. It is safe to give them 3 ccs of benadryl. Thats like a small dropper full. I got that off of a first aid sheet. |

What about eye drops? Can anyone think of any that might help in this case? |
Gery at Imapreciouspup has eye envy for tearing. If its allergies the vet has a medicine thats in a tube that you put in their eyes. |
A thick mucas discharge usually indicates an infection or chronic irritation. If he has an infection this might be causing him to being lethargic as he doesn't feel well. A vet visit definitely is in order when you can get him in. Or if he seems to be getting worse the emergency vets are open 24/7. I hope your fur baby feels better soon. :( Hugs to Bimmer :aimeeyork |

Still lethargic... Now his left eye is swollen quite a bit more than his right eye. PetSmart has a Banfield vet in there store here in Lexington that's open tommorrow at 10:00 AM. I'm going to nurse him thorugh the night and take him first thing in the morning. I just gave him .2 CC of children's benadryl to help with the swelling (vet gave it to me in case of swelling from his shot last week). I also have some medicated Rite-Aid brand eye drops. Should I try putting this in his eye? I don't feel all that great about this proposition. At any rate, things aren't great here, but hopefully they'll get better tommorrow. Do not put any eye drops in his eye unless it is just a lubricant or tear-replacer.. It is dangerous to fool with their eyes--scaring can cause blindness. You are correct in taking him to the vet. You can wash his eyes with warm water and a cotton ball. Use a different ball for each eye. Don't cross-contaminate the eyes. Benadryl at 1mgm per lb of weight is the recommended dosage but since your vet has given you a dose to give, use that.. If your baby is not eating, use honey or nutrical or similar product put in the mouth. I hope your baby recovers really quickly and gets back to his normal Yorkie self.. BTW, wash, wash wash your hands anytime after touching his face. You MIGHT catch something from him.. |
I definitely would not mess with eye drops. Be sure he is drinking plenty of water, and the benedryl should be OK, until you can get him to a vet. Please keep us posted. |

Its been an hour or so since my last post... Bimmer\'s eye swelling has gone down noticeably. I\'ve feed him again with the chicken and rice combo, but he\'s slow to take it. He\'s certainly not getting any better, but when I bring out the Nutrical, he springs back to life for that fleeting moment that he takes it in as fast as he can. Then, sadly, he goes back to sleep. I just need him to hang in there for 9 more hours... 9 more hours... I can do this. He\'s been a fighter in the past, so I know he\'ll pull through for me again. I\'ll update everyone soon... |
Hi. I am not much help, but just wanted you to know that I am thinking of you. I wonder if you hand fed him if he would take the food? Mine will do that if she won\'t eat. Be sure he is drinking water. You mentioned that the weather is nice there. Are the bees out? I wonder if he could have been bitten by a bee? Have you checked for any bumps, sores, etc.? Please keep us posted. Very stressful, and I feel your pain. |
2:00 AM here... No bees out yet, it\'s still winter here. Bimmer just woke up for a few minutes and peed quite a large puddle. He stayed awake for about 10 minutes and I washed his head with a damp rag to completely remove the hardened gunk from his eyes and forehead. My wife thinks I\'m caring too much. That\'s another story though. |
