From what little I know, I would not stop giving Bimmer any antibiotics until the Dr. gives you the go ahead. Too many humans quit taking their meds. way too soon, when they should be using the prescription until they are out. Maybe this is why he is shaking his head again. Did you stop the antibiotics? Just a thought. I have heard that mineral oil helps with constipation, but do not know the dosage. Isn't Pepto Bismo for folks with diaharrea problems? Not sure. Please keep us posted. Bimmer, and you sure have been put through the mill. Good luck! |
Doing the parvo test was good thinking on their part, not just for the money, but due to his lethargic behavior. About ten years ago I had a beautiful dog that was half German Shephard and half Wolf (I kid you not). He was just beautiful and healthy. And then one day he started getting lethargic too. Really bad. Turned out it was Parvo. We fought to keep him alive and have him pull through it. And he did, but his growth was stunted bad and he turned downright mean. Any time a dog becomes lethargic I would definitely want to rule out Parvo first and foremost. It's a very very deadly disease and recovery is hard to achieve. Better to be safe than sorry. And there is no amount of money a vet can charge that would be too much for my dog's health. |
That "stevie wonder" thing you are describing... I would have him checked for ear mites and/or an inner ear infection. |

9:37 PM | Thursday Night My wife will be the first to tell you that I'm a "know it all". As a software developer, I specialize in troubleshooting problems. This also has the side effect of becoming quite frustrated when too many variables are introduced. To accurately troubleshoot a problem, you have to remove all variables and re-introduce them one at a time. Enough of that... It's been two days now since I pulled Bimmer off all of his medications. He's spent the last two weeks heavily medicated on three antibiotics, two supplements, and pedialyte. He wouldn't eat, drink, poop, stay awake, you name it. I'm happy to report that in the last two days I have my old dog back! He eats like a horse (soft puppy food, hard puppy food, boiled hamburger, baby food carrots, doesn't matter to him) and his sugar has been stable the entire time. I still give him a dab of Nutrical in the morning and at night because I'm not completely comfortable that his levels will stay on the up and up. In a nutshell, my little boy is back to himself.... finally! He won't lay still in my lap and he showers me with the sloppiest kisses you can imagine. His tongue and gums are now pink, his eyes are no longer squinty and clouded, his lethargic behavior is gone, everything is back to the way it used to be. As I suspected, the little man was just too medicated to get back to anything remotely like a normal life. Not any more... He goes to the vet tommorrow afternoon for his next round of shots, but Daddy isn't going to let them do it just yet. Bimmer has fought his little butt off to get through the last two or three weeks and I'm rewarding him by giving him an entire week to enjoy being a puppy again. He'll have plenty of opportunities to feel like crap and have plastic sticks shoved up his rear end. But not this week. This week he's a puppy again... |
Hey, now this makes me smile big time. What a long drawn out ordeal, and not any fun to say the least. I am so happy for all of you. Let's hope he stays healthy now, and I know he will. Thanks for the update. |
