| HYPOGLYCEMIC MORKIE? Help. I have a 14 week old female Morkie named Luna, she was a gift to me from my boyfriend, when I looked closer into her paperwork, I realized that she unfortunately has come from a puppy mill. I'm not sure if this contributes to her illness but yeah. I woke up a few days ago to Luna unresponsive and labored breathing, she was somewhat limp. I took her straight away to the doctor and they said she had hypoglycemia, they fed her and sent her home. When we got home, she was doing great, walking around, etc.. then.. she started vomiting, she vomited 10 times and I got scared and took her back to the vet again, and he gave me the Nutri-Cal and told me to give it to her every 15-30 mins until she starts eating on her own again. Well I did that but it seemed she wasn't getting any better, so again back to the vet and they kept her overnight.. When I got her back she was doing great, and she's been great for the last few days. Yesterday she was a little lethargic, but still her spunky self. Last night I went to bed around 1am, and she was fine. I put her in her crate with her food and water like the vet told me to do, which I've been doing every night. This morning I woke up at 7, I was only asleep for 6 hours. And Luna was limp in her cage, she was unresponsive, cold, and she was twitching like she was having a seizure, there was vomit all over her and in her cage, and she couldn't even lift her head. I panicked, I put her on a heating pad, and started putting the nurti cal and maple syrup in her mouth with a dropper, at first she just spit it back out, but then finally I got her to swallow... she was barely breathing, and I thought for sure she was going to die. After I did this, I rushed her to the closet vet that was open.. by time I got to the vet she perked up and was able to lift her head... and now she seems like nothing even happened.... she's walking around even running and playing.. I don't understand.. I thought for sure I was about to lose her and now she's fine.. Is there something I am doing wrong? has anyone else experienced this??? I'm so stressed out and scared that one day ill wake up and she will be in her crate dead!! |

| I am so sorry you are having problems with your baby. Has blood work been done to rule out a liver shunt???

| TxVicki, No, the vet said he didn't feel that blood work was necessary.. I'm actually thinking of taking her to another vet because I don't feel like the one she's been seeing is taking me seriously. He just keeps saying this is a normal thing for Morkie and Yorkie pups and to just give her Nutri cal and Karo when this happens and she will be fine. He hasn't done any tests to rule anything out. |

| Chestermama, She's a tiny little thing, weighing in at 1.2lb.. She doesn't eat much, I try to get her to eat every hour (the vet told me to do this to avoid hypoglycemia) but she never wants to eat, I always have to give her the Nutri cal gel. She does like this little puppy treats I have (Zukes puppy naturals) but I've tried giving her a few different kinds of canned and dry food, but it's like she doesn't like any of it, or just doesn't have an appetite. |

| I always recommend Dr.Miller's Pet NutraDrops....they LOVE this stuff, it is much more effective than that messy, thick, sticky NutraCal mess, and you can give that baby doses every 4-6 hours, VERY EASILY, and it is so much better for the pup and every bit as effective as that other mess. Because of the poor breeding this pup has behind it, you may be dealing with this issue her entire life....as she gets older and bigger, she will eat her meals better, but I would CONTINUE to supplement her with the NutaDrops 3 times a day, for at least her first year of life....I buy this in gallon jugs and give it to my dogs all the time....pre vet visits, post vet visits, during breeding events, before, during and after car trips, .....ANYTHING that causes them to be out of sorts or excited or when they are recouping from any medical issues they may have....it is wonderful and they love it and it is grreat for them! I would have her on Royal Canin puppy food, canned.....she may like it better than things you have tried.....I have fged my dogs Royal Canin, from birth to grave, since late 70's....they love it, they are healthy, and I have no issues with eating or not eating, etc. Of course, your little baby does not feel well so her appetite will be adversely affected, but just give that NutraCal drops every 4 hours, and her sugar will stay up until she outgrows this unfortunate event in her life. *If you're a heavy sleeper, please consider taking the crate into your room, and turning off anything that would keep you from hearing. We've had Chewie in our bedroom since she was 7 months old. She stopped sleeping in the crate a month ago, minus the day we have her in there to keep her used to it. My husband is a deep sleeper, and I would be upstairs until very late. I recall an incident that was only 1 of two times she had an accident in her crate. both poop and vomit. she screamed. I had my headphones on and heard, but it was so brief I thought it was part of my video game noise. the next morning I found vomit every where, interspersed with extremely loose B.M. she hasn't had an incident since, as I will be very certain to jump on ANY noise I hear. They don't like doing this in their cage, so you'll get a warning. Please make sure you can hear everything. | |

| JennaPenny, Thanks for the advice, I will definitely get some Dr. Miller's to try! I will start keeping her crate in my bedroom. I am a moderately deep sleeper, I will wake up to noise but only if it's reall y loud, lol. I've set 2 alarms on my phone to wake me up in the night to make sure she's alright, better safe than sorry, at least until she's a bit older. And yeah that vet was a joke, I'm taking her to another place here today at 3:30. YorkieMom1, Thanks for your response! I ordered some of the Royal Canin food you mentioned! I've been giving her Fromm Gold dry puppy food and Merrick puppy plate wet food. Someone suggested I try to give her a little plain yogurt and cooked egg whites, she loves yogurt but she wouldn't eat the eggs. She is so finicky it's like the only thing she actually wants to eat is the Zuke's puppy treats.. |

| **** UPDATE **** Luna is home finally, and doing great. She's had a normal appetite, high energy, she's doing excellent! The new veterinarian I took her too agreed that she had a hypoglycemia incident, she has another appointment next week for a follow up and some more shots she needs. The veterinarian was very attentive, said that she looks perfectly healthy, the only problem is she is slightly underweight. Last night, I put her crate up on a stand so she could see me while she was in there and maybe it would make her feel comfortable (my bed sits high and she couldn't see me with the crate on the floor).. and that made a huge difference, she didn't whine, she laid right down and went to sleep. I'm so happy that she's doing well now, thank you guys or all your help! |

| Lovetodream88, She just said that it was common in puppies and that I have to make sure she is eating enough to keep her blood sugar stable. Both times this happened, it happened during the night.. so now I am having her eat something before bed, and keeping her crate right next to my bed so I can wake up if she makes noise, I haven't had any problem yet. She didn't take blood, but she does want a stool sample that I have to take to her appointment next week. My main problem now is getting her to eat. She doesn't want to eat anything unless its on the floor. She doesn't want to eat out of a bowl or from a plate, but she will eat her food if its on the floor. and in the rare instance that she will eat something from her bowl, she takes pieces to another part of the floor and eats it there.. |
