I will ask today when I stop in. I am home now for lunch to check on Couver. No puking since 2 am and no loose stools. He is urinating and wants to play soccer. I gave him his Sucralfate and am spending time with him. We will be at the vet this pm. Hubby wants to wait out for a little longer to see if the meds start to work. I know that many disagree with him, so I am working on it. Couver is maintaining his weight now (7.0 lbs) so at least I know he's not withering away.

Please have patience with me. I will update when I know more about our plan.

Michelle, make sure you find out the albumin as Cathy asked. It is very important! The fact that he has inflammed intestines and low protein can be a concern. May not be anything, but I would want to know.

What meds is he on? Very confusing to me that for all the vomiting he is not on Cerenia...is there another anti nausea/vomiting med?

Michelle, I am not trying to diagnose here because I don't know that Couver has what Cookie does.....I just want to share this thread with you in hopes that maybe your husband will look at it. My Cookie did not look sick at all when she was diagnosed. I took her in for something mild (I thought and so did the vet) and went back in and had blood work drawn...thank God! They called me the next morning and next thing you know she was in ICU! Not once did she look sick! If I had not done that blood work, at some point she would have decompensated...and her illness is nothing to mess with. Many times these pups don't really look sick when they really are. Just the fact that Couver has vomited for so long is very concerning. Don't mean to repeat myself.

Anyway...for your husband if he will look at it. Sometimes it is better to spend some money up front with testing before you end up with a very sick pup and you are buried in vet bills. Cookie's bill was not cheap, but I know from experience just how high it could have been had I waited.

None of those are for the vomiting Michelle. Does your vet know he is vomiting this much? I would definitely ask her for something ... but, I still think a specialist may be in order here. Kind of scary stuff ... It is good he has not lost weight, but they go down quickly.

So sorry to hear he is suffering so. As Lady Jane says, perhaps he could be helped with the N/V. Cerenia works wonders for nausea and vomiting, in my experience anyway. Isn't Panacur for worms/parasites? Does the vet think this is a possible diagnosis? Praying your poor guy feels better soon. You too must be so stressed.

His Albumin levels were 2.3 and normal is 2.3-4.0

He probably needs to be on Cerenia. Metronidazole alone won't stop symptoms N&V or even diarrhea.

We are getting a prescription for Cerenia and will see if that seems to help. If not, steroids or we will be off to WSU.

Oh poor baby! I hope the new medication helps him and you find the cause of the problem soon. It's always so scary when they are sick. :) Get well soon Couver.

I would have the albumin rechecked in the near future and if it stays on the low side, you might want to do a consult. The fact that his intestines were inflammed along with albumin being on the low side can be an indicator of a PLE. Does not HAVE to be, but if it is you want to know before it gets bad.

Why steroids? I would want a diagnosis before going that route.

Hopefully the Cerenia will help with the vomiting. Poor Couver....and poor you. Very stressful.

Cerenia will help N&V but if Metronidazole not helping his GI tract by now, maybe a culture/susceptibility test is in order to see what will work. I'd be sure he's not getting low on fluids, electrolytes, if he's not going IH.

I forgot to mention that the vet recommended rechecking his blood to determine before starting steroids because we want to make sure that they will help. She also mentioned that if it is actually cancer that is hidden somewhere, putting him on steroids would prohibit the option of chemo down the road. I am hoping that we are not missing cancer...

She wanted us to wait until the morning to start the Cerenia. He seems to have the biggest issue with vomiting at night, so she wants him to keep the Cerenia down long enough for it to take effect. We will start in the morning when we have a better chance of him actually keeping it down.

Came home from the vet and he wanted to play soccer in the front yard with me. He started running round and was shaking his soccer ball around in his mouth like he felt great. I guess we will see how things go tonight. Hopefully the Cerenia can start helping him feel better and the other meds will fix the issues. If not, we will re-test and determine the route from there.

Cerenia is great to help Rosie with vomiting. Hopefully it will work for Couver too! Did your vet recommend a food? Poor baby and poor mommy. I know exactly how you feel.

We have had him on the low fat Royal Canin food:

Hopefully between the food and the Cerenia your baby will get relief soon!

I've been thinking about this all night. Forgot to mention anything to the vet about why Panacur, but I looked up side effects. The Panacur is what I give before we go to bed at night so that he's on an empty tummy, and several hours later has been when he's vomiting. I'm wondering if it's the Panacur that's causing the vomiting? I know it's a long shot, but that is one of the side effects. Everything came back negative from his fecal, so does he really need to be taking this dewormer?

Re the Panacur, I was not able to read the blood and fecal results in the included document on my iPad? I read elsewhere that the drug could be given with a small amount of food and did not have to be on an empty stomach. As your dog is taking other meds, interactions or the meds themselves could be causing side effects. Panacur side effects are said to be rare but can cause vomiting and loose stools in <1% of pets. My dog did not have the GI side effects. Perhaps giving the Panacur with food may be better, but others here may know more about this. P can be used for parasites and Giardia as well as worms.
It is said that Giardia is not easily detected in fecals, but if suspected, Panacur should be given.
So sorry that Couver and you are going through this misery, and I pray that he will feel well again soon.

Well, I decided to skip the Panacur last night and guess what?! He had his first night with no vomiting!!! I just fed him breakfast with the Cerenia mixed in and he wolfed it all down :)

I'm hoping that this keeps up. I feel like doing a happy dance right now! Trying not to get my hopes up that this is it, but let's hope it is!

I'm going to call the vet today and ask if I should finish his last dose of Panacur or it I can skip it. He had four days of it and I feel like those 4 days were the worst of the vomiting.
