Yorkie Yakker | Loose poo This is the third night Snickers has had loose stool, some runny some just very soft. The second night this happened I caught him earlier getting into other dogs food (which happens to be prescription food/urinary so) so I assumed that's what happened. Today I was very careful to make sure it didn't happen with meals again. Is it possible the stomach upset could last thru the next night? i have another going to vet tomorrow am so he's going also, any ideas? |

| My pup ate a different food once and she had loose poo for several days until I gave her a teaspoon of canned pumpkin and it progressively got better over 2 days. |

| Mine have tummy issues for up to 5 days if they eat something different. As long as they are eating a drinking and it's not an excessive amount of diarrhea (normalish poop schedule) I wouldn't be alarmed. Give it another couple days. |

| PPO loose After a month of IT! The vet changed BB to Natural Balance Bison & Sweet Potato and now IT is GOOD! I think the vet felt she may be allergic to chicken which was in the two previous brands. After giving STAR (died in 2014) prescription for years, it feels good to give her food that I can buy at PETCO, NYC. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yes, a loose poo/irritated GI tract could last a few/several days depending on the dog.

Yorkie Yakker | Well I started getting very worried about the fact he had loose poo and diarrhea for the third night in a row. I had given him pepto the last two nights. With no results and started to get worried he could dehydrate, so at 1:30 or so that night we ended up going to the ER vet. He wasn't dehydrated and we are assuming the first day he must have gotten Jasmines food. Vet said he had a bacterial issue going on with his belly. Don't know what I think since they took him to the back to check him over? I've been there before and they always examined in front of me. This time they seemed more interested in the hoodie he had on. So we were sent home with antibiotic and now he won't poo 😕 |

Yorkie Yakker | The ER vet had me take him off his reg kibble (royal canin yorkie puppy) and feed him rice and turkey what they didn't tell me is the rice can contribute to binding him up. So I added a little canned pumpkin. Not sure if it was the pumpkin that helped or not but he finally went to the bathroom. |

Yorkie Yakker | I've never had so many worries over a little pup before I gave him a treat (he's been doing well, no tummy issues and bam, poo the consistency of pudding. He's had them before and no problem. Here we go again. Cooking turkey and rice for my sensitive pups breakfast, at 12:30 tonight..and adding pumpkin because I know he will get stopped up again from the rice if I dont. I can't figure out what's going on He's being fed Royal Canin Yorkie puppy and he's not been drinking well last couple days, but he will eat ice cubes (I melt them down to very small size, so easily chewed) any ideas ??? |

| I never have given mine turkey....had a breeder many years ago tell me turkey causes diarrhea...give chicken or lamb or beef, in that order...all bland meats that will soothe a "hot" tummy.... I would replace the turkey with boiled chicken, along with the rice..... |

Yorkie Yakker | I would have thought beef would have too much grease, he actually did really well when I gave the turkey and rice before. The vet suggested turkey chicken or egg with the rice... Now I really am confused. I can't believe he has pudding consistency poo again |

| I always have used boiled chicken, or lamb.....when using beef, it was lean ground sirloin that I boiled and poured off the grease....I would stick with the boiled chicken if I was you...boneless, skinless chicken breast....WITH the rice. If he is eating the canned pumpkin great...if he wont eat canned pumpkin, will he eat boiled sweet potato? Mine LOVE boiled sweet potato and a member on here said sweet potato helped her dogs diarrhea. I would dice up a piece of boiled sweet potato and feed it with the chicken and rice..... |

| I very seldom have issues with stomach or diarrhea with my dogs. But I was just sitting here, remembering what we used to do in the hospital for our patients that have diarrhea. We even used some of the food below on pediatric wards...... If you wanted to try what we use in the hospital, here is a list of the food we used and why they were used: Overview Doctors and nurses have long advised patients with diarrhea to follow what is known as the BRAT diet. BRAT is an acronym for bananas, rice, applesauce and toast; all of which often have the effect of “binding” loose and runny stools. In addition to these items, other foods may also help with diarrhea. Knowing the right foods to eat, as well as the foods to avoid, will help manage the symptoms. Bananas Bananas may help alleviate diarrhea and associated symptoms. Bananas are a "binding" food, which means they help increase the form of the stool and help it to pass more slowly through the intestines. Bananas are also rich in potassium, a vital nutrient often depleted during bouts with diarrhea and vomiting. Rice Rice is bland, easily digested and also has a binding effect on the stool. However, the fiber in brown and wild varieties of rice may actually exacerbate diarrhea. The dietary objective during diarrhea is to eat foods that are bland and low in fiber, both of which are qualities of plain white rice. Applesauce The pectin contained in applesauce helps bind the bowels, which could reduce diarrhea symptoms. As well, the natural sugar of applesauce helps to replenish the energy lost during the illness. This food works well since it is mild and well-tolerated. Toast can help to relieve diarrhea by adding bulk to the stool. Eaten plain, it is also a bland food that provides carbohydrates which may help with energy levels. Yogurt If diarrhea results from antibiotic use, probiotic yogurt may help alleviate or prevent loose stools, says Dr. Howard LeWine, the Chief Medical Editor of Internet Publishing with Harvard Health Publications. Antibiotics reduce the number of beneficial bacteria and other microorganisms in the intestines that help regulate stools. Yogurt may help reintroduce these microorganisms, helping to prevent this side effect. Dairy products may not sit well on all stomachs, so start with a teaspoon or other small amount of yogurt to see if it is well tolerated before consuming a full serving. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We used to put applesauce in tube feedings that we gave patients via feeding tubes....it prevented diarrhea very well. You could try some of these foods to see if it helps. Little bites of bananna, a little yogurt, some applesauce, all of these stop diarrhea in humans, and these are all good for dogs....you may want to try some of these things. |

Yorkie Yakker | Yorkiemom I'm quite familiar w/BRAT diet... I'm not currently working due to son being on chemo so I'm home w/him. But I have worked as a CNA for years just didn't relate it to fur babies. Snickers actually loves banana, and yes he likes sweet potato and pumpkin. He also loves yogurt. I just had no clue the ground lean turkey was not good? Vet also suggested cottage cheese but as milky as that is couldn't it encourage diarrhea? Thank you for letting me know BRAT diet is acceptable for pups. |

| I've fed mine lean ground turkey with no problems. I did have a new batch of treats that I figured were giving mine loose poop. The same treats they've had for months but must have been an off batch. Takes a while for the poop to return to normal. Also in my dogs case, cottage cheese makes their poop a little runny. I guess it's trial and error and elimination. Some people have luck with the pumpkin and some don't so it's tricky. |
