| 13 week old Yorkie had Kennel Cough for 6 weeks! Hi, I have had my Yorkie puppy for 6 weeks now. The night I got her she was coughed quite a bit overnight and had a runny nose in the morning. Took her to the vet and they diagnosed Kennel Cough and gave 5 day course of antibiotics. Took her back 1 week later and still the same if not worse. They advised to leave her for 10 days and see how she goes. 10 days later went back and it was into her chest so they gave 10 day course of antibiotics, went back and they said her chest was clear and she could get her first vaccination. That was a week past on Tues and she has got worse over the past few days. I have tried kids Benylin, honey and steaming for 15 mins at a time a couple of times a day. She weighs 1.9kg and her whole body racks when she coughs...I feel so sorry for her. She is eating, going to the loo and playing as normal. Do I just wait it out or go back for more antibiotics? She is back there on Tues for 2nd vaccination. Thanks in advance |

| I would hold off on the vaccines until the cough has cleared up. |

| I know they gave her the first one because her chest was clear even although she was still coughing but seems to have gotten worse since then. I feel like she is going to be 1 by the time I can get her out a walk etc... |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | What vaccination?? Did she get the kennel cough vaccination, bc that can actually *cause* them to get kennel cough itself. I don't ever get that vaccine bc it's not a core vaccine and they don't need it. In puppies, kennel cough can really last a long time, unfortunately. I'd continue to treat her and I'd ask for a cough suppressant too. I would not be getting this kiddo the kennel cough/bordetella vaccine for a very long time, if ever again...if it was given, that is.

| I should probably know the answer to that but I don't! She needed 2 vaccinations before she can go out walks etc so this was the first. I never even thought it could have been the bordatella one, I really hope it wasn't! |

YT 500 Club Member | With puppies you have to make sure that kennel cough does not turn to pneumonia. I have read about puppies having kennel cough and it turns so keep an eye on her and please keep us updated. |

YT 500 Club Member | I have also read you have to find the right antibiotic to help the kennel cough. Maybe someone that had a dog with kennel cough can let you know what specific antibiotic helped for them. Like people not all antibiotics help and people have to try many before there sickness goes away. |

| Yes hopefully someone who's dog has had it sees this! She was given a banana flavoured one that kids get for tonsillitis the second time. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | My puppy got kennel cough from the vaccine. It turned into pneumonia and she is on on antibiotics. I didn't know the vaccine could cause this. Please let others know. If it's not necessary...don't get it. |

| Bordetella Glad to read this thread, in NY you must have the vac to go to groomer or board. Since I have been advised by breeder and my cousin a breeder in MI not to get vacs that are not CORE, I have listened. Since I board larger dogs in my apartment, I make sure they have all their vacs and get BB groomed at home. |

| Good reminder to get a shot. My gf and I are getting ready to go on vacation end of this month. The vet recommended getting this shot when we were updating his other shots. This is the first time we've boarded him. Hope your Yorkie makes a quick recovery. |

| Update: Got an emergency appointment at vet for Poppy yesterday as she was still really congested sounding and up coughing all night Thursday on Friday and Friday onto Saturday! Vet advised it isn't in her chest again (thank god) but her throat was really inflamed. Got an anti inflammatory and if she is feeling better on Tuesday will be OK for second lot of Jags. If not to go back on Friday for a checkup! Fingers crossed she is OK on Tues and can get jags and get out a walk!! |

| She was still coughing on the Tuesday when we took her back to Vet. At that point they found out that she had an Eastern European Chip (not sure if you seen my other post) so basically she had been taken away from the Mum at around 5 weeks the Vet thinks. This explains why it took her so long to get over the cough!! On a brighter note her last cough was on 5th February and she hasn't coughed since!! She got her second jag last Tuesday and we had her first walk today!! She loves being outside and is going to meet my friends wee Yorkie tonight!! I will try get some pics of them together. So glad she is over it! She coughed non stop from 22nd Dec-5th Feb I didn't think it was ever going to go away!!! |
