| New Yorkie Poo Owner Freaking Out I really need help with my yorkipoo. I just received Boston on Saturday and his breeder did not take good care of him. I took him for his first shots today and his first dewormer. When we first got him on Saturday I didn't know if he would eat or not so I got him that ceaser package dog food. He ate it up like he was starving. But that made his tummy upset. I got him Iams dog food and Purina and he won't eat it. I took him to the vet today for his shots and now he won't eat anything. They gave me science brand dog food but he won't eat that either. He will drink a little water but that's it. I'm just frightened. When I got him he was infested with fleas and he still has them but I'm slowly working on getting rid of them. He just seems miserable. He's 10 weeks and weighs 1 pound. He has also been sleeping all day and not playful like he has been. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Glad you are here as you will get lots of help for your little guy. Sleeping all day, not playful and not eating could be an indication of hypoglycemia which is very serious. Look up canine hypeoglycemia if you are not familiar with symptoms. Do you have some Nutrical (a high calorie supplement product) to put in his mouth if he does have hypoglycemia? If not then apply some other form of sugar like Karo syrup or honey if nothing else. A little one like that can go downhill really fast so don't just sit and watch. He may even need to go to an ER vet. Getting them to eat can be tricky at first, but is so very important with the young tiny ones. Try giving him some boiled chicken breast finely diced. Use the broth from the chicken breast to moisten his kibble. You may have to hand feed him at first; put a dab on your finger and let him lick it off. The Caesar food is not great long term, but ok just to get him started. You can also try a little cottage cheese or yogurt mixed in; do what ever it takes to get him eating.

| You have to change their food slowly. What was the breeder feeding?

| About fleas, he is too young and small to use any form of flea treatment or flea shampoo, but you can bathe him and use Dawn dishwashing soap, lather up well and leave on 5 minutes then rinse thoroughly. Fleas multiply so quickly, and if he happens to eat one he may get tapeworms which are easily treatable with a pill from the vet (not over counter kind). Make sure he's drinking water so he doesn't get dehydrated. Shots and dewormer may be a cause of his loss of appetite too, but he absolutely must eat, so keep trying. Get him through the first phase here then we will guide you to better quality foods later. Good luck..... don't mean to scare you, but you are wise to be concerned with this little one. Keep us updated, and keep the vet's phone number handy in case things start going downhill.

| I would probably make a trip to an E R vet....being so small could definately be bad with the symptoms. |

| Not playful, lethargy is very concerning for such a tiny puppy. Emergency vet is advisable. You can try plain chicken breast and rice to coax him to eat something. A flea infestation on a tiny pup can cause anemia and loss of blood. Please keep us updated on your little guy.

| Thank you so much you guys. I wasn't sure if I could give him real food or not but I will try the chicken breast. I was wanting to call the vet but wasn't sure if I was overreacting. The breeder advised me to give him soft dog food and mix with milk. I did not do that because I did read that was bad for him. She was not a nice woman at all. I'm going to give the Nutrical a try as well. Thank you so so much again. |

| Better to "over react" than to ignore things that could be life threatening. In the first few weeks, you may have to resort to things you would not otherwise give him, just to get him started. Since he ate the Lil Ceasar food, you can use that, but mix with a little kibble. If you do use milk, get goat's milk in a can and dilute with water; don't use cow's milk.

| How is Boston doing? I would definitely give him some boiled chicken and bathe him in dawn dish soap to get rid of the fleas. You have to make sure to completely soak your puppy and get all of the fleas to get rid of them. Have you taken him to the vet?

| You can also soak dry dog food in hot water and that will make it more likely he will eat it. He is very small and not eating anything can be very dangerous because he could get hypoglycemia so you need to make sure you know the symptoms. If anything seems off don't question it just pack up and head to the vet because these little guys go down hill extremely fast.

| He is a lot better today. I gave him boiled chicken. It took him a little while to eat it then he started to eat a lot. I took him to the vet and they gave me this spray flea repellent because he's so small just to spray on a paper towel and rub him in it. I could tell a difference in his behavior already, I think the fleas were not helping his mood either. The vet gave me meds because he was a little dehydrated. Thank you guys so much for your concern. I will keep you guys updated. |
