| I had a real scare with my Jeter! Yesterday was the longest most terrifying day with my little 16 week old boy. I thought he was going down. Thankfully, he is doing great and back to his normal maniac self, I am posting my experience in the event that anyone else finds themselves in a similar situation. I love the YT community, the way everyone tries to help each other out of love for our precious little Yorkie loves. I have learned so much reading through the endless threads and posts. The day started very early in the morning when at 5:30 a.m. Jeter was in the living room barking his head off at the cats. He always sleeps in bed with me and it's not usual that he get out of bed to go potty and come back to bed but he was feeling frisky and was annoying the cats. I got out of bed to go save him from the wrath of my cats who are less than enamored with being barked at by him. His big brother decided to wake up early to play with him and they did their normal morning romp. I got back in bed as I always do while they run around and chase each other and soon after both boys got back in bed to enjoy a nylabone edible. I fell back to sleep and they did to. When I woke up and got out of bed the boys chose to stay in bed, I didn't think too much about it until Davinci came out to the patio while I had my morning coffee and cigarette and Jeter wasn't with him. I went back to my room to check on him and he popped his little head up from the pile of pillows so I went on about my morning. A little while went by and I decided to get him out of bed to take him for a nice walk. When he sat up I noticed he was bobbing back and forth. I quickly grabbed a syringe of Nutrical thinking he was hypoglycemic and got 1/2 teaspoon in him waited a minute to see if the wobbling stopped, it did not. I put him on the floor and immediately knew it wasn't hypoglycemia because he was having trouble standing upright. His tail was between his legs and his hind legs were bent and he was very unstable and wobbling side to side. I had my mom hold him while I quickly dressed and took him directly to the ER. While in the car he wanted to stand up but his balance was so bad I feared him getting hurt so I laid him on my lap and within 5 minutes we pulled into the Animal Hospital. I went in and told the receptionist what was happening and that Nutrical didn't change anything. I thought maybe his sugar had gotten so low that it wasn't enough but he had eaten a nice breakfast so I knew it was something else. He couldn't have gotten into anything toxic, I thought, so I was thinking it was his liver or maybe he hit his head real hard playing with my older Yorkie and maybe he had really hurt himself. I don't sleep very sound when he's playing and I would've heard him if he hit his head or cried. They quickly called for a nurse to come and get us and take us back to see a Vet. The Vet came in and immediately checked his sugar because she thought he was hypoglycemic too. Within a few minutes she returned with him and said his sugar was normal. I asked what the next step was and she suggested drawing blood and running a full panel. Of course I would have asked for this no matter what. She did a very thorough physical exam, no abdominal pain, no mass could be felt, all of his legs were fine, no muscle spasms, no LP's, pupils were responsive, he was alert and responsive. Physically there was nothing wrong with him. The Vet told me to take him home and watch him closely for seizures, omg or for any signs of worsening while we wait for the results of the blood work. She said she didn't think the blood work was going to show anything abnormal and that two other vets witnessed his wobbling and all agreed it looked neurological. Gave me the name of two neurologists in the area and recommended that if the blood work came back normal and he didn't return to normal within 24 hrs then the next step would be to take him to a neurologist. She thought it could be a congenital birth defect, not at all what I wanted to hear, my heart was breaking. I brought him home in tears, I had a meeting at work that I could not miss and I left him with my mom. I work across the street from home and left my mom strict instructions that if he looked at all worse when he woke from his nap take him immediately to the ER and I would meet her there. The vet called with the results of the blood work and it was as I feared, nothing was wrong with any of the levels. My heart was beating through my chest at this point. I called home and he was napping. When I got out of the meeting I called home and my mom said he was fine, he was up, eating, playing with his big brother, and running around like a maniac. Then it dawned on me the only time I had ever seen a dog look the way Jeter did 4 hours prior had ingested a small amount of marijuana. I don't know how he got into any, I am so careful to not drop any, ever. When the vet called today to check on him I mentioned that maybe there was a small piece of pot in the area rug and could that be what caused his symptoms. She immediately said that's what she thought it was when she saw him because they see this all the time but usually in large dogs that must have ingested a lot because the symptoms were more severe. She said she didn't ask about pot because when she asked if he could've gotten into any medication I said no. She wasn't comfortable asking about pot because I said no on getting into medication. I'm so relieved that my baby is okay and I'm so thankful for YT and everything I read, knowing how fast these little ones go down maybe I over react and rush them to the ER but I don't think I do. I moved everything off the area rug and did a thorough vacuuming of it this morning. Thank Goodness my baby is okay. Sorry to be so long winded but I thought others could benefit from my story in the future. |

| I am sooooo glad your pup is ok, this could have gone bad...I do know someone that this happened to, when the 25lb dog ate a joint (do they still call them that?) this is a good lesson and I bet you are right. Have to admit I giggled my but off at reading the pot part...ONLY after I saw your pup was ok!!! I'm so glad it worked out so well, vacuum the hell out of that place. Also get on your hands and knees and crawl around and get a pups eye view. Get rid of freestanding heavy things like large Vases, freestanding mirrors etc., all little knick knacks that can break or be chewed, also look up....heavy pics, mirrors etc., on the wall? I might be a tad overboard, but I've heard so many stories through the years. Thanks for sharing your story and I am THRILLED he is ok and glad you are too, I know how these things can shorten your life....ughhhh

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I am so glad he is ok . . . Our pups, I think, tend to eat more stuff of the floor because they are so close to the ground. . . Galen finds more stuff on the floor even when I vacuum lol

YT 2000 Club Member | dog I am so thankful your Yorkie is all right. These little whipper snappers can get into stuff. My JoJo managed to get to my pothos plant that was up on a table. One vine was hanging down and he tore those leaves off. Called the vet right away. I guess we have to dog proof our home just like we did for children. Your story kept me on the edge of my seat until I read that the dog was ok. I am glad for a happy ending! |
