| I stepped on my 4.8 lb yorkie My baby, Bear, will be 2 Oct. 25th. He was let out and not put on his leash so I went out the door to look for him because I was afraid he got thru the slats in the fence, and as I walked out my kitchen door to the garage, I stepped on him!! He was on the step waiting to come in. I cringe now thinking about it!! I stepped cross ways across the middle of his back. Luckily I had a bit of a heel on my shoe so that space probably saved his life. He was very tense and tight when I picked him up, probably scared because I was screaming and crying!! I couldn't believe he was not really hurt. After about 2 wks he started coughing, I was thinking it was a collapsed trachea because I had taken him on a walk with a collar, not even thinking!!! The vet took xrays and could not tell on the trachea, nothing showed up, but he noticed his heart was enlarged. I had told him about the accident but he didn't think that could have caused it. He coughs so bad at night sometimes I have to put him in his crate because we can't sleep. He is on heart med, some other med to get rid of the water in his lungs and has gone through 2 antibiotics. We did a CBC and the white blood count is still very high, like 18,000. So now the vet wants to try another antibiotic. He is really stumped on this. I am wondering if there could be some internal injuries causing this infection. He is the best dog. He is not acting in pain and his appetite is good. We will be seeing a specialist when we see if this antibiotic clears up the cough or not. Just reaching out for some insight.... I am really not a bad mom!!! |

| Sorry, I don't have any answers for you. I just wanted to say, accidents happen. Don't beat yourself up. I accidently knocked my Toby down the steps one time. Just as I went to step down, he ran in front of my foot and I hit him just hard enough for him to lose his balance and fall down 10 steps and land on the concrete floor. I, of course, felt horrible and was totally panicked but luckily he was okay. That's one of the bad the things about these little guys, they're easy to miss and tend to get underfoot. I hope you get some answers from the specialist. Good luck.

| I'm so sorry Bear is not well. I'll be praying that the new antibiotic clears up the cough and infection. Please try not to beat yourself up over the accident..... I know the guilt you are feeling, but it was an accident, and could have happened to anyone!

| I was told by multiple vets that x-rays cannot see collapsed tracheas, and a different method is used? |

| I was wondering about the same thing in case damage was done to soft tissue MRI/CAT scan instead of bones xray?

| First of all, taking a pup on a walk with a collar is not going to cause CT. If a pup has CT, a collar can irritate it, but it is not a cause. I also seriously doubt that stepping on him caused what is going on. As for diagnostics for CT....a flouroscopy is used to diagnose it. It does sound like a specialist is in order at this point. Good luck and please keep us posted!

| Bear Poor little guy, so sorry he is not feeling too well. He has a lot to deal with having heart and lung issues, and the cough must be very hard for him to live with. I feel for him, and you, as it is horrible to see our babies sick and suffering. Please do not feel guilty about your accident with him, it was an accident and could have happened to any of us. I know I have stepped on my larger boy's toes a couple of times...luckily with no lasting effects. If the vet said his current issues are unlikely to be linked to the accident, then please believe him!!! I pray that Bear responds well to the treatment and meds and that he gets better soon. Ease up on yourself....... you are in no way a bad mom. Give him a big hug from me and hope he gets rid of that nasty cough soon. Poor baby :-(( |
