| New member...Congestion/Teeth extraction Hello from Pamela and Hummer. I found this website last night after researching info for helpful hints after full teeth extraction on my precious 10 year old 4 lb. Yorkie. A long hall since mid Feb. when Hummer began snorting alot, then four eposides of choking and 10 ER vet visits because he couldnt breath following. Not willing to put him down until I found answers, after thousands of dollars of tests, the past 3 weeks has broght a mass removal surgery and full extraction of teeth. They also found a fiscula (hole) in his top pallete which we hoped would solve all the major congestion issues and breathing attacks. It is 80% better now that the hole is closed up but I will hear the congestion in his nose with alot of clear nasal drainage, especially after sleeping. Considering allergies so trying benedryl but not correcting problem. Has anyone out there had these issues with congestion and have suggestions? All other blood work and exrays show him to be healthy. He just had the teeth pulled this past Friday so I may be little anxious for recovery to come quicker. After 2 surgeries, 3 times being sedated for tests, 10 ER visits and now all his teeth gone I am emotionally exhausted. I tried to read several pages in the sick/injured forum however I am still learning the website. Thank anyone for info and hope post pics of my precious Hummer soon. Blessings to all Yorkie lovers, Pamela J |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and WELCOME to YT ! Sounds like you've been through a lot w/ this kiddo and that the issues could be interrelated / complicated....I say that bc it sounds like it could be a combo of both structural issues as well as allergies. When/if you throw allergies in the mix, it can get very confusing as to what's causing what. Are you sure at this point if allergies are present? Or still guessing? I wouldn't stick w/ Benadryl if you do think it's allergies...it doesn't work for allergies in most dogs, and it has a very short half-life which means to be effective, you have to give it every 4-6hrs (3-4x per day). Other OTC meds used in allergies for dogs are Zyrtec and Claritin, both of which are 24hr meds, which is easier. Again, they don't often work all that great, but work for some rare cases. For further reading and treatment of allergies, read here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

| Thank you greatly to those whom have responded to my thread. Again, I am still trying to learn how to get around the website but I am so thankful to all and any input. It has been one week since Hummer's full teeth removal and he is getting stronger each day. Still battling the nose drainage alot and congestion in the nose so still researching. Look forward to meeting more yorkie parents. Pamela and Hummer |

| Hello and welcome to YT. I found YT when I first got Buster and he had health issues as well. There is a lot of great knowledge. Sending prayers for Hummers continued improvement and best wishes to you Pamela as you certainly have done your best for your sweet boy. If you go to the forums page and click on the blue banner titled YorkieTalk Yorkshire Terrier Library between Yorkie News & Site Announcements and the General Yorkshire Terrier Discussions you will find a lot of great information. Best wishes to you and Hummer.

| For Hummer I still don't know how to navigate around this site, and get more confused every day, so I only hope I'm replying to the right thread. If I'm not, I apologize. If all the teeth were extracted, there will be a nasal drainage and this is also that time of year when allergies attack. The vet I work for will dispense several brands of allergy meds, but the one that seems to work best actually comes from Walmart ! It's OTC, very inexpensive and called "ChlorTabs." For Halo (5 lbs) I give 1/4 tablet twice a day. Many vets sell this and mar it WAYYYYY up, they'll sell 10 tablets for $12.00. A veterinarian secret. Hope your Yorkie gets better soon. |

| You're right, I just looked at my bottle, it says 3-4 times a day, sorry. Halo's allergies were a result of a food allergy. She was allergic to grain and I didn't give her this medication very long. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | If these actually work, that's just awesome bc they're nice and cheap ! I hope they continue to help her...just make sure you're giving them often enough to avoid them wearing off.

| My vet recommended these also for seasonal sniffies, and told me just to buy them at WalMart. They work on my Biewer really well.

| Hi, I am the mamma to 4 aging yorkies. The oldest is 14 years old and has an oral/nasal fistula that developed after his canine was extracted. He has had surgery to attempt closure of the fistula, but it is still present. He does sound wet and snorty at times. I make his food and try to keep it a good consistency to avoid the food migration into his sinus. I boil chicken breast (shredded or chopped in food processor), add peas and carrots and brown rice. We recently spent the night in the E vet. He awoke with vomiting followed by difficulty breathing. I think he aspirated. His chest xray revealed a mass vs. aspiration. we will be doing follow up xrays soon. He had eaten a very large meal prior to bedtime. I think his "old" stomach overflowed....I was advised to use benedryl to help with any secretions caused by the irritation of food substance in the nasal area....He is 4.6 pounds and seems to be doing better. Good luck to you!!! |

| I thank you so much for posting this regarding your your experience with the fistula and ER visit also. I am so sorry you had to have this event, since I have had 10-12 trips lately I so know the anguish in the entire event. I did want to share that the last one Hummer had my vet used a very large syringe and just a child used it in his throat a couple of times and after that he breathed perfectly fine and turned pink. I am not advising to do this I just wanted to share what he did, Hummer seemed to still have alot of infection which I pray this stronger takes care of. If you have more to share on it please write me!! My sincere gratitude for writing, Pamela |
