| Hemorrhagic Diarrhea My 6yo yorkie, Prince, developed a sudden onset of bloody diarrhea and vomiting. Went to the vet and first thought colitis, gave him a shot for nausea and pills which I could not get down him. Later in day he became worse, with frequent episodes of bright red diarrhea. Told by vet to try to give him pepto and Gatorade but couldn't get much down. Took him to vet hospital, they gave him ~1L of iv fluids and iv antibiotics and was told it is probably hemorrhagic diarrhea. Might be able to bring him home tonight after 1 night in hospital but I've read this can recur. Has anyone had to deal with this before? (It's horrible! and very serious) |

| Hi and Welcome to YT! Wish it was under better circumstances though. If you do a search of YT for Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis or HGE many threads will show up. It is very serious, and if you cannot get him to take the medication, he would do better in a hospital for 3-7 days, depending on the severity of the disease. The blood test PCV is high in dogs with HGE, and they really should be monitored in hospital until that test shows a normal result. Last time my dog had it, he was on an IV only, nothing by mouth for 3 days, then slowly they got him eating again. It can be different for each dog though.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome to YT. Sorry to hear about Prince. My Cali had 2 bouts of HGE. The first was worse as the ER vet didn't catch it just treated her with medicine for the diarrhea. I took her to her regular vet the next day when she seemed worse. They kept her and gave her IV medicines and fluids. Then for a few days I would take her to the vet during the day for treatment and then take her home at night. She had another bout a couple of months later and I caught it very early and she was given medicine and sub q fluids and was much better 2 days later. The key is to catch it as soon as possible and get treatment started. As KJC said above they need to do the PCV test. I hope Prince makes a speedy recovery.
