| Almost Lost Zach In A Snowdrift During the blizzard on Jan. 2 we almost lost Zach in a snowdrift. We let the dogs in the back to do their thing and to play. We usually go out with them but this time we stupidly didn't. A few minutes later all the dogs came in except for Zach. We ran out to the back and couldn't see him but we heard him barking and crying. We were in a panic. We let the other dogs out hoping they would find him and sure enough they all went to this one spot and started barking. We ran over to the spot and we didn't see anything except a big mound of snow all of a sudden the mound started moving and we started digging like crazy and there was Zach frozen and shaking like a leaf. We wrapped him up in a warm blanket and rushed him to the emergency. They said he was going to be fine and gave him some antibobiotics. I feel so guilty I shold have been out there with him. We never never let them out in the back without watching him. Just one mistake could have cost him his life. The vet said that in another few minutes we would have lost him from hypothermia Thank God for our basset hounds and their great noses. Not only did they find him they also dug him out with us. Never will they be let out alone again. I hope nobody else will be a stupid as we were. |

YT 2000 Club Member | Wow, that had to be so scary! We haven't had very much snow this winter...just extreme cold, which is dangerous in itself! Thank goodness you got to him in the nick of time!

| I can see how that could happen. We had 6-8 inches of snow and there were some quite high drifts. I took Maggie out to say Hi to dad when he came home and tried to get her to pee in the tiny area he had cleared for her. She had an idea of trying to head out back for some reason and just hopped off the driveway into the snow. It was up to her chin! She just stood there in shock! The last time it snowed it was much less and she was able to go into it (thought she doesn't like it at all). I guess she just thought she'd be able to walk in it and find a spot to pee. It was so funny and I felt bad for thinking it was funny. Then when she came in she just ran around the house rubbing her face on the carpet. But, if I had my back turned I can see how she could have gotten lost or frozen in just a minute, especially if there was a drift. Happily everything turned out all right for your family, and now you have a story to tell and use to warn others. I would add that people near lakes should be careful as well. |

| This is a good reminder with record lows predicted for today across the country. Not just snowdrifts, but making sure our babies are not outside long enough to get too cold. This is the weather where Huey just potties in the garage, not out in the cold. He may run outside for 30 seconds, but he runs right back in!

| I have no idea how he got into the drift. I thought at first it blew off the roof onto him, but I'm really not sure. All I can say is Thank God we realized he was gone right away because I don't know what I would have done if we lost him. As I said before I will always be grateful to my bassets for being there they are the best We had to bring Zach to the vet last night because he was having a problem in his neck. The vet told us to leave the collar on him for a few days but otherwise he is fine. Last edited by lexi43; 01-06-2014 at 09:53 AM. |
