Are the brown bits scabs? My Yorkie was really scratching and biting at the area just above his tail, about two years ago. I looked and saw little scabs and thought it was flea bites. I was in Scotland at the time and the weather was mild. The vet looked and did not see any fleas so he prescribed an anti itch soap because everything else looked fine. I found out later on the UK Yorkie sight that some dogs do this scratching at the base of their tail if their anal glands are bothering them. So I checked and sure enough a bunch of fluid came out. He was fine after that and the scabbing soon went away because he had being causing it himself.
This last episode was different, he was itchy in lots of places and especially scratchy when we came to bed at night. I am so glad that it was the food and that we found out before putting him through loads of tests etc.
