Calleigh's 3rd leg surgery.
 
No she doesn't have 3 legs. Lol. :) Calleigh has had LP and ACL surgeries on her left leg in the past. Now she is having LP and lateral collateral ligament repairs on her right leg.They will do both surgeries at the same time. I am beginning to wonder why her legs are so susceptible to leg injuries. She doesn't jump from furniture at all. She will be operated on this Thursday. Any good thoughts and prayers would very much be appreciated. She is 6 now, and as most people know, anesthesia can cause any owner to worry. Thanks in advance for your prayers.

I don't know where you got her from but perhaps its congenital or hereditary? I have been through that with Mini and I know how you feel. I hope everything works out for your pup and you!

I have a 1 1/2 year old girl, 7 lbs. She has always had a skip with her fast walk. Its her right back leg. My vet has checked her out a few times and sees no problem like LP. What were the signs that your baby had? I'm taking my girl to see a ortho pedis surgeon next week for answers. I also sometimes hear a pop when I pick her up and hold her. Can't figure this one out!

Pups with LP are susceptible to ligament tears due to the wear and tear on the ligament because of the patella slipping in and out. While jumping should be avoided, they still can tear a ligament.

The ortho surgeon I use recommends that puppies with LP have repairs done....he is less apt to do it with an older pup because often the pup will end up with a torn CCL and end up having two surgeries when it could have been just one. If repaired in a puppy, then the ligament does not go through all of that stress.

I do highly recommend a board certified surgeon do the repair.

Anesthesia is just not the risk that people think. As long as you are using a vet who is doing up to date protocols, there should be no problem.

I could understand if I bought her from a pet store, but I bought her through a reputable breeder. It still could have been hereditary...I'm sorry to hear you went through the same thing. Thanks for your kind thoughts.

When this happened last week, Calleigh had a bad limp and her leg is sticking out. That is from the lateral collateral tear. She has had some popping in her knee cap for a little while, but the vet said she had a grade 2/3 LP and wouldn't need surgery yet. Her surgery will be this Thursday. They will repair both. I'm very happy about that.

Thanks Lady Jane. Calleigh is scheduled for the surgery this Thursday. She will have both problems repaired. I'm happy about that. The Ortho doc is board certified and I checked him out. His credentials are good. He does this surgery a lot. Thanks so much for your helpful remarks.

It is SO common now in yorkies that I think one might be hard pressed to find a breeder who has never had any pups with LP.

Carol, Calleigh and you are in my thoughts and prayers as you get her ready for surgery on Thursday. You know she has my favorite head tilt in the whole world, so gotta get her back to feeling great soon, so you post some of those darling pictures after her surgery. Hugs, my friend!

You're like me, my dogs have two legs and two arms, some people think their dogs have 4 legs! :D I just want to send prayers to you and Calleigh, I know this is hard for you and I'm glad Calleigh is in such good hands!

Haha so true, when we do treat time, I do ask for their hand, not their feet.:p

Please let me know what the Ortho doc tells you about your pup. I hope things will turn out fine for you.

Thanks again Ladyjane for your kind thoughts and prayers for Calleigh. It really breaks my heart after surgery to hear to moaning. She does that when she's coming out of the anesthesia. I'm sure it's very painful. I know how I felt when I had my hand surgery. I'm looking forward to much better days. :)

Yeah, I don't like that part either. Usually that moaning is from the anesthesia but it still hurts my heart. Just keep her on her pain meds so that you know she is not in pain....and yes, each day does get better! :) I medicate my ortho pups for a full week with pain meds to be certain they don't feel anything...or at least as little as I can make it for them.

Thanks so much for all of your well wishes and prayers. I know you are aware of how hard having a sick pup is. God Bless you for fostering Buster. He was so loved.

Thanks so much for your prayer for Calleigh. It is difficult to see her like this. I'm so glad I'm home now, or I'd need to take a vacation. I couldn't leave her after the surgery. TTYS!

I will definitely keep her as medicated as possible. I don't want her to have much pain either. She is a little trooper though. I have to watch that she doesn't run/hop after her surgery. Do you know if she will have a cast? She had a cast with the LP surgery and not with the ACL. For some reason I felt better when she had the cast....

I hope Caleigh's surgery goes well. I pray that she heals quickly and is soon fee from pain. My heart breaks hearing all that you and your little girls have gone through.

I have never seen a cast on them...a wrap sometimes; but none of mine ever had more than a tiny bandage. I think maybe it is individual with vets doing different things that they think works best.

My Cookie recently had CCL and LP repair done. I forgot to mention what I did with her. She is a wild child and I was totally dreading her recovery...she turned out to be one of the easiest ones yet! I kept her in a stroller 24/7 instead of crating her. That way I could take her with me wherever I was. She ended up loving it! :) I would take her out for her walks to go potty and when we walked back into the house she would go directly to her stroller! I kept a leash on her when she was in it so she knew not to go anywhere. There is a thread all about her and her surgery and recovery.

I so appreciate your prayers. As I said before, she is a trooper. My main problem with her is trying to keep her quiet. Hopefully, the meds will help with that initially. She came running/hopping to the kitchen this morning. I think I'm going to have to find a way to block off her sleeping area for a little while.

I'm surprised you hadn't seen a cast for the LP surgery. She had the cast with her first surgery. I thought it was SOP. Live and learn. I did have a stroller for Calleigh and she really liked it. I gave it to a friend when I moved to CA. I think at some point I may get one for her as she ages. I love to walk her to try to keep her weight down. Calleigh is a wild child too. :) For right now, I think I'm going to try to block off her sleeping area. Tomorrow is the big day. Today is bath day. :) Sorry your little one had to go through this also.

The ones I have had done were TPLO repairs...they don't need a wrap on them. Maybe it is a different repair? There are a few different types of repairs and different surgeons prefer whatever they feel works best.
